You need to go watch a Harry Potter film. The stick is to simulate the brooms the contestants in the film are riding around. It might be more realistic if they had made the sticks with an actual broom.

Some teams used brooms but obviously not required.

Thanks, Eugene. Shooting sports is a bit more predictable than shooting birds, especially small ones. But the settings are similar.
