Cutting down trees. Under bark found this. Alive and jumps!! Nested in a shallow hole of his shape. I hav never seen one of these. Some sort of tree bore I assume. Evergreen tree.

If both images are the same bug, I'd go with <eastern> eyed click beetle based on the first shot.

.thanks again!! That's exactly what it is. I looked it up and saw video. Rather a unique bug looking bug. Don't know what it's doing here in northern Illinois tho!

Well, that's one reason why it's illegal to transport firewood over a certain distance from its source.
