Do you use a dash cam, and if so which one?

My son’s Suburban was side swiped last week which caused it to jump the curb and hit a stop sign, damaging the front as well as the driver’s side. The other car drove off, but my son’s GoPro (older model) captured everything including the offender’s license tag. The police used the information to track down the other vehicle and assign blame for the accident, but said they couldn’t ticket the other car because they couldn’t prove who was driving (???). If it hadn’t been for the dash cam, my son would have been screwed.

Since running stop signs and lights and 15+ mph over the limit on city streets in my city has become SOP, I’m thinking, as much as I hate the idea of a dangling cord down the dash, maybe I should consider one in addition to my usual ultra defensive driving. Looking for recommendations.

I am also looking for one of them. But I want one that has front and rear views. From what I understand the install that looks the cleanest visually can be done but it’s going to be around $300 just for the install. I can’t crawl and bend the way I once did so it’s going to be done by a pro outfit. Still not sure which unit is best, but I did run across this article:

I've seen a lot of YouTube videos where dash cams saved people from the cops, sometimes even showing the cops were lying. The cops say you don't need them because they all have body cams, but often you can't get their videos without a lot of time and even lawsuits.

My only objection to this is that you only see the videos where the cops are wrong or, at best, neutral. What you don't see are the thousands of videos where the cops are right, honest and professional. I think they would outnumber the "bad cop" videos by a very wide margin.

OK - back to the OP's question - I recommend Rove - I've tried the cheaper units and have not been happy with them - I am very happy with this brand as it has the all the features that I want.

excerpts taken from the site:

3 cameras that simultaneously record front, cabin, and rear at a resolution of 1440P+1080P+1080P

Touchscreen and a single power/restart button to eliminate your effort of pressing buttons

Built-in GPS, G-sensor, loop cycle recording, emergency video lock, Parking Mode, Time Lapse, external storage supporting up to 512GB

Instantly Access Evidence Straight To Your Smartphone with the Built-in dual-band (2.4 & 5 GHz) WiFi - you can view the dash cam’s live footage, configure its settings, download recorded videos at a rate of up to 15Mbps, and easily share

Powered by a Super Capacitor rather than a lithium-ion battery, ensuring surveillance and safety in both extreme hot and cold weather conditions from -4°F (-20°C) ~ 158°F (70°C). Unlike regular internal batteries, Super Capacitors provide a longer camera lifespan and prevents internal damage.

Smart Auto triggered 24-Hour Parking Monitor - Whenever someone hits your car while parked, and the impact reaches the G-Sensor Level, the R3 dash cam automatically turns ON and records a 1-min video, and then locks and saves it in a secure space to avoid auto deletion.

100% USA-Chicago Based Customer-Centric Company & Customer Care and backed by a full 1-YEAR WARRANTY.

I use dash cam for almost 4 years. So far, it works well and, luckily, I haven't had a need to use it as proof yet.
It is made by Chortau and yes, I had to reluctantly accept the dangling power cord.
I bought it on Amazon Canada. Here is the link:https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07HDYDHQS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Used for several years but it died and I gave up. It was handy for several purposes... in case of traffic light and/or wreck... for recording the area around camp sites as we drove thru campgrounds (with audio of our comments)... but we no longer camp. I go on the local Air Force Base a lot and they will not let you have it... they have to see you unplug it and take it off the windshield before you can proceed... it got to be an aggravation that kept me from buying another unit.

I have one & it’s worth its weight in gold. I’ve had numerous close shaves, it records the action very well. It also shows your speed too, in case it can incriminate you. But the ability to review the action in slow mo, has amazed me. I would love to have a rear view one too. More folks should be aware of what is behind them too.
Awareness is important.

My Garmin GPS has a built in dash camera, never needed to keep the videos but have looked at them.

I use a Nextbase there are several models to choose from some have an additional unit that plugs into the side for rear view, but these are sometimes difficult to focus because of rear headrests and small rear windows,so I think a separate unit is better, just my opinion.

Agree with it's worth - my daughter has front/back cams and has turned over videos to accident investigators showing who did what - saved a young woman from being blamed by a red light runner who plowed into her car...

I have the Vantrue E1 front camera and am very pleased with it. Very small and takes great video which can be downloaded to your phone. Purchased from Amazon.

It's good to hear that the miscreant car was identified. The owner will be responsible. Without the Go-Pro, your uninsured motorist insurance should have kicked in, if I'm not mistaken, which does not require a deductible.
