As people might have noted from my previous posts, I've done a lot of traveling and taken a lot of pictures on these trips, including a habit of getting shots of Historical Markers. Of course, the markers are put there so that travelers and visitors are aware of the local history or events that have taken place at those locations, and like the people or groups who arrange for them be to erected, I'm going to share some of the ones that I've encountered so as to help everyone appreciate the history that I've learned about...

This marker commemorates the fact that while General George Custer was born in Ohio, he considered Monroe, Michigan is home town - August 1968 - Minolta SR-1, 55mm


And here's the statue of Custer in Monroe, which BTW, was also the home town of both my parents - August 1968 - Minolta SR-1, 55mm


Being that I've crossed the Mackinaw Bridge numerous times, I've stopped at many of the nearby historical sites, like this one near St Ignace, Michigan - September 1969 - Minolta SRT-101, 58mm


Thsi is one of the most visited state parks near where I went to college just adjacent Copper Harbour, Michigan - October 1970 - Minolta SRT-101, 58mm

Interesting. I find historical markers quite interesting. I once had a notion to photograph all of them in AZ and publish a booklet of them. Never did it. Someone else did and probably made a mint!

A marker at the Whitefish Point Lighthouse, near Paradise, in Michigan's upper peninsula. It was off of Whitefish Point that the lake freighter, the Edmond Fitzgerald, sank in 1975 - August 2008 - Sony A100, 18-70mm


The Whitefish Point Lighthouse is one of 42 Michigan lighthouses on Lake Superior. In total, there are 129 lighthouses in Michigan, more than any other state - August 2008 - Sony A100, 18-70mm


And another one of those lighthouses on Lake Superior is the Copper Harbor Lighthouse, at the mouth of Copper Harbor, Michigan - August 2008 - Sony A100, 18-70mm

And speaking of Copper Harbor, it's also the starting point of US-41, one of the longest North/South highway in the nations, going from a few miles past Copper Harbor, to Miami, Florida - August 2008 - Sony A100, 18-70mm


US-41 starts just a mile or so down that road, which runs past Fort Wilkins State Park - August 2008 - Sony A100, 18-70mm


And a few more miles down US-41 is the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse, another one of those 42 Michigan lighthouses on the shore of Lake Superior - August 2008 - Sony A100, 18-70mm

What a great post and my kind of traveler. It is obvivous that you got off the interstate. I should have had a bumper sticker that read This Vehicle Stops At Historic Markers. If there is a sign that reads "Something Interesting Two Miles Down this Road", I'm turning off. It took us eleven days to get from St Joe, Mo. to Yellowstone, but we saw some interesting things between here and there. Thanks for sharing.
