Three Wars

I was driving through Baraboo Wisc and stopped at this Veterans Memorial along the road. I had my little Canon A1200 with me, 12 MP & optical finder. These are not "art" shots, but images of well preserved war machines that may bring back memories. I was particularly struck by the fragility of what was the first jet ever used by the USAF in the early 50's. I'm sure the Huey is a real memory jogger. [Me, Army 66-60]

I was USAF 64-68. They were still flying the T-33, the two-seater version of the F-80 then.

What was the flying time with those fuel tanks?

I have no idea. I was not a pilot, but flew a lot in other aircraft as a passenger. Those early jet engines were not very fuel efficient.

I flew the navy version of that plane, T2V, in 1958. Endurance was between 2 and 4 hours depending on the altitude and power setting.

I live about a block from Gunter AFB. There are no planes there. Not even a runway, but a bit of helicopter traffic. The UH-60 Blackhawk sounds nothing like the 'whop whop whop' of the Huey but I still some times have a start when one flies over my house. I guess the memories of those days are ingrained in some of us, never to be forgotten.

They are ingrained, indeed. I was at Ft. Bragg on Main Post. They had tanks from the East side of the post fire across Main Post to the target practice fields on the West side. The "whistles" of the shells are indeed ingrained, especially when coming off a ten hour shift. And they did open up a Copter port on the base. With a diverse of copters, of course.
