Hi
I will be flying to Las Vegas next week ,carrying my D800 DSLR
Not sure if I can carry the camera batteries as carry on or should I put in the suitcase that I will be checking in as luggage. It's United to LV then Spirit return to EWR
Thanks

Do not pack in checked luggage. Carry on board in your roll-aboard or your personal item. This has been my experience. Lo

With either a plastic cap over the terminals or in thick individual plastic bags. Under no conditions do you want anything conductive to possibly short the terminals (not if you’ve ever experienced a LiPo fire).

You should ONLY carry lithium ion batteries in carryon.

Lithium-ion batteries are only allowed in your carry-on luggage. They cannot be in checked baggage. If not installed in the device they are intended to power, contacts must be protected against short circuit. The originally-supplied covers are preferred, and batteries are limited to 100 watt-hours each. (This shouldnt be a problem...most camera batteries are 15 watt-hours or less.)

Do not put any camera equipment in a checked bag. It is to easy for it to go missing (stolen). At the TSA screening remove the equipment and put in separate bin to help speed your way through the process. I have a separate pouch for spare batteries.

Lithium Batteries in Baggage
Tuesday, February 4, 2020
Lithium batteries, which power everyday devices, can catch fire if damaged or if battery terminals are short-circuited.

Devices containing lithium metal batteries or lithium-ion batteries, including – but not limited to – smartphones, tablets, cameras, and laptops, should be kept in carry-on baggage. If these devices are packed in checked baggage, they should be turned completely off, protected from accidental activation, and packed so they are protected from damage.

Spare (uninstalled) lithium metal batteries and lithium-ion batteries, electronic cigarettes, and vaping devices are prohibited in checked baggage. They must be carried with the passenger in carry-on baggage. Smoke and fire incidents involving lithium batteries can be mitigated by the cabin crew and passengers inside the aircraft cabin.

If carry-on baggage is checked at the gate or planeside, spare lithium batteries, electronic cigarettes, and vaping devices must be removed from the baggage and kept with the passenger in the aircraft cabin. Even in carry-on baggage, these items should be protected from damage, accidental activation, and short circuits. Battery terminals should be protected by the manufacturer’s packaging or covered with tape and placed in separate bags to prevent short circuits.

Damaged, defective, or recalled lithium batteries must not be carried in carry-on or checked baggage if they are likely to be a safety concern by overheating or catching on fire.

When in doubt, leave it out.

Check the FAA’s Pack Safe website for the rules on carrying these items and other dangerous goods in baggage.

Thanks a lot to all members who responded immediately. I have a backpack camera bag in which I put my camera, lenses. I will keep my batteries in the same bag and use it as a carry-on/personal item. At security, as suggested, I will take out everything from the bag and hoping the TSA agent will allow me.

For all my previous photography tours, I used to drive. This is the first one I am flying , just nervous.

Thanks again.

This. You will see signs all over the terminal and boarding area prohibiting lithium batteries from going below decks. I've never had a problem carrying my camera gear into the passenger compartment.

And for good reason. A Li ion fire in the cargo hold took down a UPS 747.

Yes never in checked luggage, that is against the law. The reason why, in checked luggage it can become an unreachable and uncontainable fire hazard that has brought down planes in flight in the past.

Follow all FAA rules and guidelines:

. . .

Unless you specifically are asked to remove the items, leave them in the bag and put the bag in the plastic bin with your shors snd picket contents. They can see everything they need to see on the X-ray screen. Removing, and then repacking items just slows down the line for you and everyone behind you.

For reasons that were never explained my girlfriend’s carry on was flagged, re-X rayed and swabbed for explosives when they saw she was carrying candy: a box of Milk Duds and a box of Good and Plenty. The lady behind us had the same procedure for a box of chocolates. Go figure.

Each airline has their own policy. You can check with them on web or call and you will be able to find out exactly what their policy is. I have taken mine on board without issue over the past couple of years in my carry on.

Look at the airline's website and see what they require.
