Original Post That Went to General Forum

At my request, a new specialty forum for DSLR Video has been established as of November 8, 2012.

While I have just begun to explore this capability with my cameras, I am anxious to promote this interest here at UHH and hope to share ideas and movies produced in this format.

You will be posting in the specialty forum that Admin created that bears the name of this topic heading.

To get us started I suggest this site that just touches base with reagard to what you need to get started:

http://cnettv.cnet.com/still-cameras-shooting-great-video/9742-1_53-50105536.html

This link covers some fundamentals for shooting video:

http://digital-photography-school.com/introduction-to-shooting-video-on-a-dslr

If you want to see one of my preliminary forrays into making short movies, I share the following, Miami Dancer, on YouTube.

Important: because of the length of MOV files, any of the work you wish to share will need to be posted on YouTube.

Before posting videos on YouTube, you should familiarize yourself with ITS guidelines, especially with respect to copyright as far as copying other videos and the use of music is concerned.

Of course, standard UHH rules also apply here.

Here is my YouTube link offered for your comments and criticism:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETZUwueSXtE

I look forward to working with you in exploring this great resource available to us on our still cameras

I TOO LIKE VIDEO AND DID IT FROM 1982 TILL 2002 WHEN I TOOK UP NY FIRST DIGITAL CAMERA AND GOT INTO PHOTOGRAPHY. I STARTED OUT WITH 3/4 INCH TAPE THAN WENT TO 1/2 VHS TO 1/2 INCH SVHS THAN WENT TO SONY DIGITAL TAPE ALL IN THE 3 4 ASPECT RATIO. COMPARED WITH WHAT WE HAVE TODAY IT WAS ALL JUNK. TODAY I'M JUST DOING STILL PHOTOGRAPHY. I HAVE 2 CAMERAS THAT WILL DO VIDEO, D90 AND D7000. I HAVE NOT DONE MUCH WITH THEM AS STILL ARE LESS WORK. I'M 67 AND MY LAST SONY CAMERA WEIGHT ABOUT 20 POUNDS.
YOUR VIDEO:
ONE OF YOUR LINKS TALKED ABOUT SOUND AND I THINK YOU WOULD HAVE A BETTER VIDEO IF YOU DUBBED IN THE MUSIC AND DUMPED THE AMBIENT SOUND, MUCH CLEANER. IF YOU PLANED AHEAD TO DO THAT YOU COULD HAVE GOT SEVERAL DIFFERENT SHOTS OF THE DANCER' GOTTEN RID OF THE PEOPLE WALKING IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA AND PRODUCED A MUCH NICER VIDEO. A VIDEO HAS A BEGINNING MIDDLE AND AN END. SO A TITLE AND CREDITS WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE.
VIDEO EDITING PROGRAMS ARE CHEAP TODAY. I USE CYDER LINK POWER DIRECTOR 10, ABOUT 100.00 BUCKS. MY FIRST 3/4 INCH TAPE TO TAPE CUTS ONLY EDITOR WAS $11,000.00 BUCKS. IF I HAD ONLY WAITED.
TODAY I WORK AT TWO RACE TRACKS AND SENSE 2002 I'VE SHOT OVER 17000 RACES AND WELL OVER 35000 SHOTS AND ON ME 6TH CAMERA. I SHOOT HIGH JPEG AND RAW AND STORE ON DVD AND 3 BIG EXTERNAL DRIVES.
I KNOW THIS IS A RESPONSE TO A POST IN NOV BUT JUST FOUND IT. WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME OF YOUR LATER RECENT WORK.
SORRY FOR THE SHOUTING CAPS I DO EVERYTHING IN CAPS

Thanks for your remarks and comments. Big learning curve ahead. I just wish people would start posting SOMETHING.

Traditional approaches would suggest beginning, middle, end, but lot of movie makers broke from that. Consider Andy Warhol movies. My stuff will more than likely be slices-of-life.

But thanks. Just picked up a new book on DSLR video. I'll peruse it and post a brief review of it shortly. Kurt Lancaster, DSLR Cinema; crafting the film look with Video.Focal Press, 2011.

Thanks.

Andy Warhol movies, I THINK I'VE HEARD OF HIM NOT SURE, BUT DID A SEARCH FOR (Andy Warhol movies) AND WATCHED THE FIRST ONE I CAME TO. ALMOST 7 MIN OF USELESS CRAP, EVEN MY ADOBE FLASH PLAYER BOMBED OUT. BUT IT HAD A BEGINNING, MIDDLE I DIDN'T SEE THE END. IT DID HAVE A MUSIC TRACK AND NO OTHER AUDIO AND I'M GLAD OF THAT, SOME OF THE SCENES I WOULDN'T WANT TO HEAR THE SOUND.
ONE THING I DON'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT U TUBE IS THE COPYRIGHT ISSUE OF THE MUSIC. EVEN HIS HAD MUSIC THAT WAS COPY WRITTEN, EVER BODY HAS MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND THAT IS COPYRIGHTED. I PUT VIDEO ON WITH MUSIC THAT I OWN AND I GET A LETTER FROM U TUBE TELLING NOT TO USE IT.
YOU USED THE TERM "slices-of-life" I'M USED TO MAKING DOCUMENTARIES AND "slices-of-life" COULD BE A DOCUMENTARIES WHERE THE VIDEO COULD HAVE A MUSIC TRACK A NARRATIVE, A TITLE SUB TITLES AND A CONCLUSION, ENDING CREDITS OR WHAT EVER. MUCH MORE INTERESTING TO SOMEONE ELSE.
YEARS AGO I HAD A CLIENT THAT WANTED TO GIVE ALL HER SLIDES OF TRIPS TO A FAMILY MEMBER AND I TOLD HER THAT THEY WOULD BE OF NO USE TO THEM UNLESS THERE WAS A NARRATIVE TELLING ABOUT THE SLIDES. WE ENDED UP PUTTING HER VOICE IN BACKGROUND. MUCH MORE INTERESTING

There is music available on you tube that you can add to your videos, I had them flag a video I took of a laser light show at Crazy Horse Monument with the music playing over the loudspeaker there, I think it is still banned in Germany. There are a bunch of music clips to choose from in quite a few genres but if your video is too long you can't stretch them or combine them, the music will just end while your video keeps playing. There is a search function but if you don't know exactly what you want it is pretty useless. I just put up a series of a drive through the Cascades and added mostly electronic music, I used a Casio EXH10 camera on a beanbag dash mount. They are long and boring videos with bounce provided by the road but I like the way the music makes them tolerable. there is a link to my you tube channel in my signature.

As a new uglyhedgehog member I just saw this post and dslr vdeo section. I am also interested in making videos and have posted 15 of them over the past 4 years on my youtube channel bobspez.

I enjoy still and video photography but think video is much more interesting than still photography because of the added elements of time, motion, sound and editing. I hope some more activity will be generated in this section by those who are willing to post.

Regarding your video, Scoutman, I thought it was quite captivating. But it was basically just a clip rather than a finished video. As you mentioned in your youtube comments it needs editing.

If you are interested in pursuing video you can make a copy of your clip and see what can be done with editing. I use Adobe CS6 Pro with Windows7 - 64 bit for editing and amazing things can be done with changing the zoom and lighting, creating slow motion, disolves, placing two clips side by side, adding titles, stills, etc., all in editing, just using a single clip as a source.

The soundtrack can also be edited as well. I use Adobe Audition CS6 for sound editing to add tracks, change the volume, add narration, etc. It has the added advantage of working as a standalone audio editor or being called up from the video sound track in the CS6 video editor.

I generally spend 8 to 10 hours editing a 3 to 5 minute video.

I too have been in the video since the late 80s starting with the 3/4 inch format and still have video cameras but have since stayed away from video to do more Photography. I found that most people want to make their first video a 1 1/2 hr blockbuster movie, complete with a full crew, all for 50 dollars or less. Beside when I go out photographing i am by myself and shoot what ever I like and not what other people think what others like.

I put up a time lapse video here as it is video but a series of photos. When I go out I will setup a camera and let it do it's time lapse thing and I will use my other camera and do my thing. I was using my 5DII but the shutter count was getting too high so now I use my SX50 set to 2 megapixel JPG and will mount it on a windup timer to give it a slow pan of the scene.

I use Premier Pro, (I still have premier version 1.4 from back in the 90s.) I find I can import the full directory of images as a folder them move then to the time line add frame blending and I am finished. But if I open a new sequence and import the other sequence in I can now do a time stretch, meaning I can fine tune it to slow it down or speed it up.

I just can't wait for this winter to end been a bit much this year we have not had this much snow here for a long time. Going to Florida soon so I hope to have some interesting time lapse video when I get back.

My wife and I just got in from shoveling snow for the third time this week, more expected tomorrow. But snow in NJ must be a fraction of what you are getting in Ontario. Is there a link to your lapse video? I tried free trials of editors but I think Premiere Pro is as good as it gets on a PC. I first learned editing using 3/4 inch tape and linear editing machines at free classes subsidized by the cable company and the community TV channel. There used to be some good local stuff produced by amateurs when I lived in New York, but now that we are retired to Southern NJ, the cable company just makes money without giving back to the community. That's progress.
But back then there was no youtube where anyone can post there stuff for the world to see or ignore. At least it's open to everyone.

I volunteered at a cable company for a few years then became an employee for 10 left and now just use antenna for my TV as you said they are getting bigger and not giving back for something they got for free TV signals.

Nicely done time lapse video. Great soundtrack and striking ending with the sun.
