laptop not seeing photo through readers

I have always used a card reader to upload photos. Suddenly I can only load them through the photo program (windows 10) that starts automatically when I attach camera directly to the laptop and turn it on. I could live with that but it significantly downsizes the Pic size when it loads to the laptop. I have searched around the laptop and camera and can't figure out what might have changed. I may need to take it in to a service shop to get it figured out but thought I would mine the depths of UH member knowledge before incurring the expense. Does anyone have advice on this topic?

- Did you re-boot the computer?
- Does the card reader/computer mount (acknowledge) the card?
- What are you trying to transfer them with?

Hello
Check the simple things first before making any changes. If your carder was working fine before and now it's not I would start with that device first.
1. Check your carder reader
2. Check your USB ports, maybe move to another USB port and(test)
3. Maybe replace the card reader
Give that a go and let me know how that goes.

Well that was quick. I simple reboot of the computer seems to have solved the problem. I should know better by now. Thank you.

You do not say, but I assume you are using the built-in card reader on your laptop. What make and model of laptop are you using?

As someone else mentioned, a good reboot is always the first thing you might try. That means hold down the off/on key for at least 10 seconds until your hard drive stops, if you have one that you can hear. Leave the computer turned off for 30 seconds. Ten seconds is all you might need, but a bit longer never hurts. You want all of the charge stored internally to short to ground. Then restart your laptop.

If that does not help, there is another simplde thing to trry, that is to remove the battery and make sure that everything does discharge. You will want to look up the resetting of your particular laptop on the web because different makes have different key combinations to discharge all the capacityors inside the laptop.

One last idea to check is to make sure that your card is still in good shape. You might want to buy a new one and shoot a few pictures that save to it and see if that works.

Hope one of these work. --Richard

Yup! Rebooting a computer is like taking a nap. One is refreshed and ready to tackle again.

I occasionally have to re-boot the desktop to get the three computers talking to each other over WIFI again. NO idea why. Just waking the desktop does not work.
Sometime when it doesn't work, then ten minutes later it will, and I did nothing. So annoying.

I am quite satisfied with one desktop. I do have a laptop for travel, but I've not traveled since 2019.
There are unquestionably "things" that live inside computers that control behavior. Humans do not yet understand those "things".

Actually, it was two different external card readers. One for cf express and one for xqd and sd. Windows explorer just would not bring them up before the restart. It would see camera file but not bring up the thumbnails for transfer. My normal workflow is to transfer the raw files to a monthly nef file in "pictures" and the edit from there. I am relieved to have this problem solved.

1. Using Windows File explorer to look for your [Loaded] Card reader. It should appear as another HDD.
Verify that you can find your images there. [Assuming .jpeg immages]
2. Are you using an External Card Reader or the Built-In SD reader on your computer?
try another Card Reader on another USB port. [SD Card readers are cheap] I try not to wear out my internal SD
reader on my Dell Tower, using an external reader unless I need to use both to duplicate a card.
3. Try a different [New] SD Card. ALSO make sure your camera is outputing in .jpeg not RAW. RAW files require a
special program to read and edit them. [View NX by Nikon ETC]
Good Luck!

Why would you plug your camera in if you are using a card reader? Only the card should be plugged in.

It is always intersting to see pages of resolutions to a problem that was noted as resolved at the top of page one.
