Love these guys at the right time of the year when they are all dressed in their breeding plumage. Their were tons at La Jolla this last November even before the numbers increase in January. I even heard from regulars there that the number of birds seemed to be way more than normal. So opportunities were unlimited. With this shot I like the side light compared to having the sun directly behind me. Just a bit different. Hope you enjoy constructive comments are always appreciated.
Sony A1, Sony 70-200 vs. II, 2x converter at 266mm, f/5,6 (wide open), 1/5000, ISO 800. 7:00 am.
Nice portrait of one zany, cool lookin character.
Great pelican portrait Frank.

Excellent shot, Frank! I am renting that lens to try on my Sony A1 at the end of the month when we go to Hilton Head.

Hi Mike, I thought the version one of this lens was awfully good, but version 2 really, really, really good. I don't think I would have considered putting the 2x on the original, but I am pleasantly surprised that the IQ with the converters is really nice. I have heard comments that version 2 with converters makes the 100-400 obsolete. Thanks for looking and commenting. I have been loving the trip you took us through northern Arizona and southern Utah. Wonderful part of the world.
I like the tone & composition of this sharp capture.

Very nice detail and I agree with you about the side light being different and interesting. The "crest" being up is a bonus.
Not always easy to do at my age, but in the location you shot this bird at, if you were able to get lower you would have had clear blue blurry water as the BG rather than the distracting surf/waves. Still a very nice image.
Great photo! I really like these birds. They are so ugly but so graceful in flight.

I like your observation about the option of getting lower for more separation of your subject and the background creating a softer background. In this instance that was not an option, unless I had an excavator and dug a hole in the cliffs in that the bird was below me, and of coarse the foreground would have had covered up more of the bird. Alternatively, I kind of like the depiction of the turbulent Pacific Ocean's waves crushing against the cliffs. I appreciate your comments however. In many instances, getting low, and in many instances almost having your camera on the ground can create some really nice affects. But the older we get, the more difficult it can be, especially getting back up. Thanks for looking.😊
