My wife's farm in IL has several grain bins but none are painted, all are "metal" colored. They are used to store grain until prices go up. Grain price is often low right after harvest. These allow for storage 'till prices go up. Her farm is 1500 acres; her relatives farm it for her on shares. We live in MI, often visit in the summer. It's a corn/bean farm, maybe a field or two of wheat. She has a great accountant that oversees things for her.

Thanks, Mike. There is high use for these kinds of grain bins, and most farmers have a number of them, usually much bigger both in size and number. This one, I suspect, is a remnant of a farm that was. I believe it is part of a familiar story. The farmer dies, and the land is sold to another farmer, one with a much bigger operation and who has no need for any of the old stuff. The house and barn have been razed for more farm ground, and this is the only evidence left of what used to be. Progress, they say. It’s kind of sad.

Yes, that’s the way it goes.
