It's a long article relating to the colors of comercial LED lighting and the color shift of LED lighting over time.

The article is not targeted to photographers however LED color and color-shift with time is important to photographers because It has implications for the quality of LED studio lighting as well as white balancing of indoor LED lighting.

From the article:
"a new lighting-efficiency standard has finally taken effect. The Department of Energy is scheduled to start penalizing incandescent distributors and retailers this month, levying fines of as much as $542 per illicit bulb, with full enforcement of the ban beginning in August. The plan is for LEDs to be the only available form of artificial lighting."

I personally have no problem with LED bulbs most of the time. I've installed them throughout my house with one exception. I have a three way incandescent bulb next to my bed. I find it easier on my eyes when reading. That's the only exception. I anticipated the ban from previous news articles and bought a case of 12 of these incandescent bulbs just two weeks ago. If anyone else has an issue with LEDs, then I would suggest buying incandescent bulbs as soon as possible. My understanding is that their manufacture is already banned, and they're selling off inventory now.

I personally have had problems with them. I recently returned a box because they would not stay lit. Also the color is difficult to white balance. I do have bank of LEDs in the garage, purchased from Costco, that I like and it has been working properly. So my experience is mixed.

WOW!

Do they have LED replacements for halogen desk lamps? Or will I have to buy a whole new lamp. (I do have 1 or 2 spare bulbs.

I already replaced a bunch of lights with curly fluorescents a few years ago, when they were the cat's meow. This includes two 150"W" curly bulbs in a tall garage ceiling. The only problem with them is that they have to warm up in the winter before they provide the rated light.
I wonder ho long before the fluorescents we have will quit.

I'm slowly replacing the remaining incandescents (and dead fluorescents) with LEDs when they quit....

I'll guess brand dependent. The dollar-two-ninety-eight bulbs might not be near as good as other brands.

I'll have to look for the lbulb ID that I use.
Mine are much littler almost flat square bulbs.

Get the bulb number and do a search. Likely you will find a replacement.

Reliability is another issue. I've had a few fail very quickly. Also I've noticed that when you dim the dimmable kind, you have to stick with the same brand if more than one is in the circuit. Different brands will dim at different rates.

The use of LEDs is important with the carbon footprint of an area. This is more important if your electricity is provided by fossil fuels. I've been using them for years, and for the most part they are very reliable and long lasting. All lights in the house with the exception of two are LEDs.

The carbon con, is politics. I was hoping this discussion would focus on to color and color shift.

I've been using LEDs for years. They are especially good in Europe. I've checked them with a spectroscope and they exhibit good full color spectrum without gaps or lines, very different from fluorescent. And they have been an incredible blessing in EFP and ENG video work. They are good and only getting better. Truly win-win
