This is interesting. With this device, you can control your garage door from anywhere by using your cell phone. And it's cheap! I can live without it, though.

So I can control it from Topeka... Why?

I have a button at the house entrance, and a control in my car.
I have no desire to control it from someplace else.

If you're on an Arctic cruise, and you think you might have left the garage door open, you can close it from your phone. I see a problem, though. Pushing the button on the remote makes the door move to its other position. If it is already closed, then sending a signal with your phone will open it.

Ho-hum. Ademco developed a home-control interface back in the '90s. (I did the firmware for it). It used DTMF tones, so just about any phone could be used. 'Course, you had to remember which keys to press, but if the security system was set up properly, you could open your garage door, arm/disarm your alarms, and turn your A/C on from any place that had a phone, all while getting the alarm system status. I'm pretty sure (retired a decade ago) that they have a 'net version available.

"Remotely controlled garage door opener! Comes with free alarm system!" 😲 🤪

My grandson was in Saudi Arabia. He thought his car should be run to keep everything charged. He used his phone and started his car in the states. He probably should have told his mom first. Very scary to hear a vehicle start up in your garage when your home alone

My newer garage doors connect to my home Wi-Fi, and it has an app for my photo. I've gone on bike rides a couple of times and forgot to shut the garage door while messing with something on the bike in the driveway. Wife says I'm dead if I do it a third time. I've gotten a mile or two away and thought about it a few times. I pull the cell phone out and check if the door is open. If so, I can close it from the app. I guess that makes if a lifesaving technology.

Yes, that's a definite problem. Anyone with a garage door opener can be hacked. I've seen that online many times. Of course, you can fool the hackers by disconnecting your door from the opener.

My new garage door opener comes with a MyQ app that controls the door via WiFi but it requires 3 bars of connectivity and we only get 1 to 2 where we are so it won't work.

One nice thing about it is that if you're on vacation, the app will tell you if your door is being opened, possibly by someone with nefarious intent so it could prevent your house from being robbed. On the other hand, couldn't someone hack your garage door thus gaining easy entrance to your home? Or is that just me seeing the glass half empty?

I can do that with my cellphone without an app. I just call my wife and have her open or close the door. She's always at home in the kitchen. 🤕🤕🤕

Nah!! My Grandson, Sam will call me to check the door - luckily, only 5 min away.

If someone wants to get in, he'll get in. You've seen pictures of NORAD at Cheyenne Mountain, right? That's what it takes to keep everyone out.

I get a kick out of entry doors that have so much glass that a thief can break one small pane and reach inside.

Another consideration is a power failure. I have a lockable cable on the front of my garage door. If there's no electricity, I unlock it, pull the cable, and the lifter will be disconnected from the door. Of course, I could also use the side door to the garage.

Security is an illusion.
