What the CEO said is correct. The company does not set prices. They are a wholesale distributor. They have increased profits not because they are gouging people. They are having record profits because they are continuing to produce eggs at their historical rate while other companies have been unable to continue to produce.

In fact, one of the reasons for the decrease in eggs due to the avian flu is not birds with the flu. It is government officials who ordered the k*****g of scores of chickens not because they had avian flu, but because they had been exposed to it. They k**led thousands of otherwise healthy birds.

The Maine company has just reaped the rewards for not having birds that were exposed to the avian flu and for government actions that destroyed other birds.

Even farmers believe there is gouging!

There might be gouging, but it isn't by the farmers, which is my point. The company you cited that had record profits isn't doing the gouging. Farmers have virtually no control over the cost of their goods.

You know what I really find very interesting about this article? The two lines below that I highlighted.

"Cal-Maine is by far the largest egg producer in the U.S., owning more than 75% more egg-producing hens than the next largest company, according to industry publication Watt Poultry. Egg prices spiked in late 2022 and early this year, as consumers paid 70% more for eggs in January 2023 compared to January 2022. The dramatic rise in egg prices came amid a nationwide outbreak of avian flu. Remarkably, none of Cal-Maine’s hens have tested positive for the disease, Miller said Tuesday. Egg buyers have begun to experience some relief, with egg prices dropping in February for the first time in five months."

Now the question I have is WHY the largest egg producer in the U.S. had ZERO hens that were tested positive for the disease.

Location, location, location. That and a whole bunch of the egg layers that were k**led had not tested positive either. The government inspectors ordered their death.

Maybe some politicians have investments in that company?

It wouldn't be politicians. It would be bureaucrats. Department of agriculture I think.

So you agree there is gouging by corporate greedy parties. That is exactly my point.

Do you have actual evidence that the price gouging is actually occurring? I don’t know either way because there’s no investigation on it yet as far as I know.

Those aren't actually evidence that prove price gouging, those are at the moment just accusations levied by one group. So my judgment stays the same, I'm neutral at this point. But, if it is found that these egg producers are in fact price gouging, they should be forced to pay back every penny and them some.
