Most of the reviews of that lens are from people who don't use it. I've had one for years and it is an amazing utility lens.

There is a design flaw with that lens that rears its ugly head when the lens is used a whole lot and it costs about $600 for Canon to fix. There is a ribbon cable that the insulation wears out and causes the electronics to stop working. After Canon replaces the cable, the lens is ok. It can take years of heavy use for this to happen. I used mine for many years and eventually had to send it to Canon for repairs. Like I said, for $600 they replaced the cable and basically rebuilt the lens. It is still my heaviest used EF lens, and yes, it is a wee bit on the heavy side. It's a great utility lens when you don't want to be carrying more than 1 camera.
Anyway, when you find one in good shape, if you can, find out if Canon has replaced the cable.
Also, a lot of people call it a dust pumper. Personally I've never had that problem.

I had one then got the 35-350. The previous owner just had Canon go over it. I’ve probably taken less than 50 pictures with it. I went to four thirds. But I really liked the results

I am surprised anyone has parts or will work on it - this was never a popular lens for the fortune it cost $$$$. The user reviews I see and the users I have talked to are not good. Of course, it matters what you are expecting - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMGx3f08B1Y

Canon still sells that lens and they still have parts for that lens and they still repair that lens. It is a versatile utility lens. I have used one for many years and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about its performance. I've even used it on my R5 and R7 with excellent results. There are lots of people who don't like it simply because of its push pull design. They call it a dust pumper. I never had that problem, ever. I guess, unlike some folks, I know how to use it.
Is it the fastest lens or the sharpest lens? No. But it is fast enough and sharp enough. Another great thing about that lens is it could also double as an effective weapon. As for user reviews, I'm a long time user of that lens and if I need its focal range and I only want to carry one camera, guess which lens I'm going to pick, and I own a lot of lenses. As I said, it's not the sharpest or fastest or lightest, but for what it is, it's hard to beat. That's a user review from someone who actually understands the lens and uses it.

One used for sale - https://www.adorama.com/us1659174.html

Released in '04 - It actually tests fairly good with Imatest numbers - in the center - https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/canon-ef-28-300mm-f35-56l-is-usm-review - Oddly, no Ken Rockwell review ......

I have this lens and used it extensively for years. Now it needs that expensive repair, but I still use it. I can circumvent it by turning the camera off and on again every now and then! It IS heavy, but it's probably the best lens I've ever used.

You should seriously consider getting yours repaired by Canon. When mine broke, I took it to my go to repair shop, Authorized Camera Repair in Willow Grove PA, and they told me to send it to Canon because Canon would not only fix it faster than they could, but Canon would also cost less. So that's what I did. The cost Canon quoted me was about $150 less than what Authorized said they could do it for, and I had it back from Canon in less than a week.

I own quite a few EF mount lenses, I've been collecting them for over 20 years, and I'd say without a doubt, my EF 28-300L is the EF lens I use the most. It practically lives on my 5D mk IV, but I also use it on my 90D, R5 and R7. What makes it so good to me is it's not the best at any single application, but it is without a doubt the most versatile lens I own, and that's what Canon designed it to be, versatile.
