Amazon has a WD 20GB external hard drive on sale for World Backup Day. The price is temporarily $279. On the other hand, a 4TB WD M.2 costs $299, on sale from $699. Imagine having 16GB of data on that drive and having it fail.

Did you mean 20 TB? 20 GB is pretty small nowadays.

That’s a good deal on a drive that large.

Sounds great on initial examination. I could consolidate several existing external HDDs on this thing. The catch is that I don't trust these things enough to rely on just one for backup, so I'd have to buy three of them, two for in the house and one to keep somewhere else. That's what I do with my smaller drives. I'm sure that storage on smaller drives would add up to the same cost, but in my case, they're already purchased, and I have a lot of "headroom" to add data.

A lot depends on how much you trust the quality control in the country of manufacture.

If it sounds too good to be true, it isn't. There are numerous fake drives that claim have high capacity but don't. I strongly suspect this is NOT a 20TB drive.

Oh, it’s real alright. Western Digital makes several different models 20TB and even 22TB drives. The question is whether it’s a great idea to place that much data on a single device. Plus imagine the backup window and how long it takes to move 20TB of data off-site to your DR site. Plus, it’s an SMR drive: https://www.extremetech.com/computing/309730-western-digital-comes-clean-shares-which-hard-drives-use-smr

Right now I don't think it's a good idea as a 20TB would hold all the data that you have. However, in the near future when 20TB only enough to hold the images you took from your last trip then it's not only a good idea, it's needed.

I paid $349.00 for a 1TB external Seagate hard drive in 2007, which still works.

I also wouldn't trust that much data on a single drive. It would be awesome on a 2 or 4 bay NAS, where if one drive fails you could replace it with no loss of data!

I couldn't fill a 20TB hard drive in 10 lifetimes!

All your backup eggs in one basket?
No thanks. I also would rather have multiple smaller storage devices, that I actually have and also have paid for.

Amazon have had similar ones on sale here in the UK. Remember the old adage "If it seems too good to be true then it too good to be true." This is a case in point. Don't fall for it.

You need to check your facts. This is NOT a scam. Whether it’s a good idea to use drives this large is a different question.Western Digital makes 18, 20 and 22TB drives - no surprise there. The upside is the large capacity. The downside is it, like many others, is a SMR drive. If you want to check the WD model numbers, here’s a chart showing all the WD drives, capacity, and whether they are SMR or CMR drives: https://nascompares.com/answer/list-of-wd-cmr-and-smr-hard-drives-hdd/
