Wind generators are huge! Walk up to one and its hard to believe they can be lifted that high. This is the crane they use to install or repair them and it is amazing of itself!
The generators are over 200' tall and the 600kw generator weighs in at 164 tons! The blades are over 140' long.
I don't like them...think they are a blight on the landscape. There are hundreds of them here in the Texas panhandle.
Amazingly, a couple years ago, a worker fell off one near here & survived!
Notice the counter-balance weight on the back of the crane...shows to be 309,000 lbs!

Awesome documentation photo. What a footprint that beast has!!

Talk nice to the crane operator and you can get some photos from on high... no no, just kidding.
A for real chuckle, the auto popup ads algorithm sorted thru and came up with an ad below your post:
"Farm Windmill Ranch windmill"
The photo shown is like my grandfather had. Site below says you can design your own.

A buddy of mine runs a crane like that. The “dog house” or rectangular unit with the generator weighs 200,000 pounds and it it installed all at one time as a unit. The three blades and hub on the ones he builds weighs 160,000 pounds and is also installed as a single unit. Incidentally, the blades are made of fiberglass and do have a limited lifespan and must be replaced occasionally. And although they turn pretty slowly, the blade tip speed is really fast and each one kills numerous birds, bats and so on. A few years ago a DNR study in Missouri found that each wind turbine kills something like 240 birds and bats were killed over the course of a year. That included endangered Indiana Bats, protected birds of prey and so on. I wonder if the environmentalists promoting “clean” energy know the turbines are slaughtering birds and bats?

Unreal Shots. I wonder what the daily rental cost is. How long does it take to move and assemble the crane.

Nice shots of the monstrosities. They and solar panel farms reming me of a book I read some sixty years ago while in college. Its title: “The Rape of the Fair Country."

Very nice set John. Here in the Garden State we're finding dead whales every week or so washed up on the beach. Many think wind turbines are to blame.

Several years ago I was traveling across America and saw many of these turbines being transported. The blades require several pieces of equipment b/c of their great length. But, the "dog house" as you called it was huge! Up in the air they appear to be of a much smaller size than they actually are. They approximate the size of a railroad box car, and those are BIG! As controversial as they are, the jury is still out on their effectiveness. They do harm birds and the authorities claim to have results to prove/disprove those claims. Politics enter many different ways of life. And, while it may have happened and we have heard nothing about it there has not been a reported case of one falling down. That is a remarkable fact as there are many of them already in service, with more planned.
