New to me lens

I just received it today, advertised as EXC +. On inspection, there is a speck, light and about a millimeter long on the inside of the front element. Outside the image area, because I am using it on DX cameras. Second, I thought I was ordering a VR lens, because at 84, I need all the help I can get. Question: are the issues I have mentioned worth a return and exchange? Thanks

The speck is nothing, but the vr is if they told you it had vr!

The lack of VR might be an issue.

What lens did you get and who did you get it from? Anyone can rate a lens any way they want. Will the presence of the speck always bother you even is it is not visible? If so return it. Is the price you paid acceptable for this lens with that flaw. If it is not priced with that flaw in mind, return it. VR won't help for sports and wildlife. But if you primarily shoot static images at lower shutter speeds and lack a rigid stance consider returning it. If you are concerned about VR due to your age, how heavy if your camera/lens combo? It may be too heavy regardless of whether the lens has VR or not.

If images don't show the speck/artifact, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you got it from KEH or BH, I would let them know about the mark.

Yes, return. You're not satisfied, as well as you'll want the VR. Get a return authorization and return / exchange for the lens you actually meant to buy. Don't wait or rationalize.

The speck is really nothing, regardless of format.
If you expected a stabilized lens that is an issue. If it doesn't say it is stabilized that is your problem for failing to read the ad.
If it does say it is stabilized and it is not then return for your money.

. Yes! Return it or you’ll always be unhappy with it.

If you want VR then you should return it to get the VR.
As for the speck I don't think it affects the image but that not because you have DX camera.

Use it - if you see an issue then you have one - if you don't then you don't

I started to use vr around 2006. It helped, but minimally. Around 2014 I got a lens with the new generation vr. The difference is amazing. The older generation gave me about 1/2 stop of help. The new generation gave me 2-3 stops.

If the lens you got is an older model I wouldn’t expect much from vr. If it’s a newer model I would send it back for a vr version.

Return it and get the lens you actually want.
