Hi, I'm a mom with two kids, one USAFA & other a senior. I am taking my daughter's senior photos & re-got excited about photography. I haven't gone off Auto for 22yr. & recently took a simple refresher course to see just what I want to do for my future in photography. I learned: I forgot a ton, I need to get a Mac? I should get out of using Picasa & use Photoshop Elements?
I'd like a Portrait/macro lense, (but looks like I have to go $900 to get AF if I want it telephoto too?) Can't manually focus well & don't wear glasses yet. My favorite subjects would be portraits & landscape/macro/nature.
Question: What kind of classes & equipment would be the most beneficial to me in the long run. I have a Nikon D40, w/18-55 3.5-5.6AFkit & 55-200,4-5.6AF VR I'd just like to be great by the time I have grandkids to capture! I have a good eye, but am technically handicapped as far as the computer stuff.
One of 500 I've taken.
Need to get a MAC? No, some still think the graphics are better and more user friendly, but there are a whole lot more people that do not use them and get by nicely. Need Photoshop Elements, CS5 or any other editing program then what you have? Another no - many programs offer lots of options. I would suggest that once you decide your needs exceed your present program you may want to consider Elements just because it is one of the most used. As to instruction -geez, a truck load of choices I would suggest you decide how you learn best and then attempt to narrow it down - online, in class, books and so forth. As to equipment I would suggest you learn what you have very well, then you will have a better idea of what you think you need. The short reply, know what you have to learn what you need, shoot lots, don't sweat the small stuff {and it mostly is} and have fun. Nice picture - looks just like her Mom. Yes - I know, no idea; just something people say.
