I picked up an absolutely mint Nikon F in the Nikon carry case (leather?) w/a carrying/neck strap that has a Nikor-S Auto 1:1.4 50mm lens mounted on it plus this lens. I am unsure what exactly this lens is. Anyone care to enlighten me? Many thanks.
One of the finest macro lenses ......EVER !
Thanks. Would it be compatible with a D7200 realizing it would be manual focus?
Easiest way to be sure: Check out the lens compatibility list on

No. Don't try to mount it. This is a pre-AI lens (before 1977). You will break something. Back in the day, Nikon offered aperture ring replacements for these lenses. That time has long passed, but there are people/services that can modify the aperture ring by cutting a groove in it. I agree that this is one of their best macro lenses ever. I own one. It's the sharpest lens that I own.
Looks like it is a Pre-AI lens and will not mount on a D7200. SNAP!!
Thanks. Found this out before I read your post. Might have to find some 35mm film and try it out on the F. I like close up photography, especially flowers.
I have owned that lens for many decades. Think I bought it in 71 or 72 new. Still functions flawlessly. It’s a true macro and a gem. Subject to camera distance isn’t much when shooting macros with it. The bare lense is a great walkaround piece of glass. Today I use it on a Df body but the Df can mount it. It will work perfectly on your F film body which is where I started with it.
If you do use it with the extension I’d suggest you take a handheld incident light reading and the do the math for proper exposure. Stop down metering in that mode is a pain in my book. Have fun, good luck.

I’m not sure what your title means. I am certain it’s not a “regular” lens, what ever that is/was. I suppose “regular” lens might have been interpreted as a “M42-mount lens” at one time. From the replies you’re received, it
was a “regular Nikon” lens before the meaning of that changed …… and then changed again.

The lower section of the lens you posted, the portion with M2 printed on it, is an extension tube that allows the lens to focus closer and attain a 1:1 or life-size macro image. That means you can fill the frame with an area 1"×1-1/2".
Without the extension tube the lens is capable of a 1:2, or half life-size reproduction ratio.
If you use the lens for general photography you should mount it without the M2 extension tube.
WOW! Thank you. Much valuable info.
What I was asking was if this lens was a normally found, ("regular") used 55mm lens, or as this post has played out, something much better, being a very well-liked macro lens. Sorry if I confused you with what I was asking.
Thank you. I did not realize that it had an extension. I was curious as to what the gray lever was.
