AI being questioned

Just saw a news clip having to do with Elon Musk and others voicing their concerns to do with AI., saying we need to put a moratorium in place to put future developments on hold till get a better grasp of what the potential consequences may be. It's hard for me to believe we are that close to being on the brink of distruction brought about by quarks, neurons, positrons etc. but on the other hand, I'm all for playing it safe.

Ah, someone else who read Asimov.

I seem to remember one story in which an AI controlling missiles decided to launch on various targets, and the heroes came in from deep space to make a surprise attack on the AI's main computer core to end it.

Genie is already out of the bag.... Do you think ANY governments are going to slow down research ? Just DO NOT put the machines in charge !

Yeah, put a moratorium on progress. That'll work. 😉

Whether you think of AI as progress or not, we've never been able to put a limit on what people want to do. Our only chance is that those in charge make the right decisions. Looking back through history, that seldom happens. Humanity is going to be subject to the whims of computers, like it or not. Because the goal of AI is making a computer that can learn, it's out of our control.

Ah but if you read Asimov you know his three famous laws of robotics:

A robot may not injure a human being or allow a human to come to harm.
A robot must obey orders, unless they conflict with law number one.
A robot must protect its own existence, as long as those actions do not conflict with either the first or second law.

Maybe Congress could create legislation requiring these laws to be part of any AI's programming. That is, of course, unless robots have money to lobby legislators.

I saw the news clip that the initial post mentioned. The next day I watched another news clip on TV noting that AI is already being used to imitate people's voices to commit fraud in a number of different ways. I'm with those who are worried about what AI can do, will be able to do, and how to combat the people who use it for ill gotten gains. I think that we have opened Pandora's Box and it may be too late to close it.

With all our concerns about terrorism and mentally imbalanced world leaders, it may come down to an AI program that believes mutual destruction favors the US or China because we have more population than other countries and since it would believe a small fraction would survive, the larger population countries small fraction would be larger than their small fraction and would therefore be a win for the larger countries.
