My sympathy for your frustration with Photoshop...

Perhaps it is time to switch to a modern buy and use photo editor not the rental like PS. Perhaps that is the update "girl" images is telling you to date that girl Sorry for your frustration with Adobe, I was stopped years ago by PS and its learning curve... Reflecting on my home car repair, a big box of expensive "Snapon Tools" far too expensive when utilitarian "Craftsman Tools" do all I want and need to fix my photos.

Photoshop is a program the discourages beginners from editing photos, it is excessively complicated. New approach is to have a good basic editor and AI plugins. This year AI is improving flamingly fast ... example NVIDIA's Canvas 360 which is free in its Beta form... some programs you will just use a microphone to tell it how to modify your photo. Eventually a Tesla Nuro-transplant will only require you to think. Film to Digital was a revolution, now editing is in a state of disruptive revolution. As in Cars, the OEMs editors like PS will be left in the dust by the new e-cars AI editors they ignored. Playing catch up is a hard path, hard to think in a new language ... PS will try; will they succeed?

Yes, Topaz Products are my "Craftsman Tools" because they are Robust, Good, Fast, and Automatic or fully adjustable.
The result is that they make me . . .

Photoshop has and is still the industry standard for professional editing since the mid 90s.

Your update is fine if the version is current. Not sure I understand why you care what picture appears when you boot it up.

Is photoshop hard to learn? Yes. Why? Because it isn't a beginners software. (see above where I mention industry standard for professional editing since the 90s)

Lightroom is your friend. It's just the easy parts of photoshop all with sliders to move to edit. Great AI for masking. Organizes all of your stuff easily.

Photoshop is for photo manipulation. Not basic editing.

That said... Plenty of free or super cheap editing tools. Some do some stuff good. Some do other things well.

It could be that they use a different splash screen for the two operating systems, or they update them at different times, or is it possible your friend changed her splash screen?

What is the latest update from Apple?

You can learn your version by clicking on Help . . .About Photoshop. Current version is 24.3.0. The car is in the splash screen. I'd say your friend's version isn't current.

The modern editing tools based on modern computer language "Affinity... Best subscription-free alternative to Adobe Photoshop." Affinity will cost about $40-$70/lifetime with free updates til major change which in the case of Affinity 2 that was 5 years, compared to Adobe PS about $21 per month continuing or it disappears. Your $21/m or $250/Y will buy a wonder of modern AI plugins to attach to even years old editing software.

If Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan were ask, he would sing... "Don't stand in the door way times are a-changin' ...the first will be last." So it is going for Photo shop and Adobe. Photoshop people, times have changed, time for you to get out of the door way and go with the flow.

I generally prefer seeing a pretty girl rather than a car.

PS and LR should let us choose the picture that appears when we start them.

I've been using Photoshop since CS3 and find it to be far and away the most capable editing program available.
