My family and I went to Washington this past weekend to see the blossoms. Sunday was the best day it rain all day on Saturday. The crowd was overwhelming. Some shots were from the car because parking was at a premium.

Nice shots. I remember hearing that these trees were a gift from the Japanese government. however I do not know when, nor the why behind the gift.

The trees were gifted to the U.S. in 1912 as a symbol of friendship. The original trees had to be destroyed due to an infestation.

Before I started full-time remote work my office was less than a 10 minute walk from the Tidal Basin, so I would go in early on a weekday to get the morning sun and avoid the crowds. On the weekends I would kayak over from Columbia Island Marina and shoot from the water.

(I feel a little like a tourist guide. I live in the D. C. area). The cherry blossoms found around the Tidal Basin of the Potomac River in Washington, D. C. were a gift of friendship to the United States in 1912. You can read about their history here.

What isn't known to tourists is that there is another great display of cherry blossoms in nearby Kensington, Maryland. It's an upscale neighborhood, but now the locals know about it, so it's a stay-in-your-car rolling exhibit, at about 5 mph. But gorgeous!

The Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the highlights (there aren't many) of the D. C. locale. There are wagers and speculators (and experts) who predict the "Peak Bloom" time. This past weekend was it. Congratulations to all who visited and got your photos!

It’s actually not Kensington but the Kenwood neighborhood in Bethesda. It’s in the triangle formed by River Rd, Little Falls Pkwy and Goldsboro Rd. There are many other places to see cherry blossoms in the DC area but that and the Tidal Basin are the big spots.

Really ironic - I live less than 10 miles from the Tidal Basin, but haven't seen the Cherry Blossoms in 50 years! Should steel myself and brave the crowds.

Thanks for the views.

Used to live in Northern VA and worked in various places at Pentagon and in the district…and ran many a time down to the Tidal Basin…almost knocked a young lady from Japan into the water one day as she turned right in front of us. Luckily I was able to grab her in a bear hug (with me dressed in shorts and sneakers) and we ended up perched right on the edge of the water…woulda gone in except for my running buddy then grabbed ahold of me and pulled us back as we were nearing the point of no return. Nobody was hurt though…she was embarrassed that she stepped in front of us and I was embarrassed that a sweaty me ended up bear hugging a nicely dressed young lady on her honeymoon…and Japanese tourists are pretty much always dressed to the nines here in the US.

I can't remember the why but the when is before WW2. Quite a bit before the war. Grew up in DCand we always went down for the Cherry Blossoms and the 4th of July celebration. My mother drove right by the Tidal Basin (where the cherry trees are) on her way to and from work.We loved the blossoms but they brought so much traffic.
Thanks for the [pics, beautiful.
