Alto, Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo and sometimes Tenor if called upon to do so. I started at 10yrs old and turned professional at 16 yrs. I forgot the Soprano sax which I still play today for my own amusement 😎

Valve trombone? Ya’ know everybody always sounded better when they played with Bob Brookmeyer.😎 The 1962 Verve Stan Getz and Bob Brookmeyer album remains my favorite to this day!

Yep. I’m probably thinking ‘62 based upon where we lived at the time I got it. The record was a pick of the month on Columbia Record Club’s Jazz selection. We were moving from Wayne, NJ to Champaign, IL and my teenage world got stood on end after my first year of high school. I played lead alto in HS Jazz band (really just a dance band with some Marshall Brown & Stan Kenton charts we all hung out over on the U of I student Union on jazz night. Ex Champaign alum Altoist Kim Richmond got his start as a serious arranger there (UofI). After HS I played a gig in the summer of ‘63 with a tenor band at Shafer Lake /Indiana Beach. As a musician, I turned out to be a better geologist, photo interpreter, and Systems Engineer (all of which paid more steadily and fed my family. My wind got too short; my tenor got heavier; and nobody wanted to hear jazz anymore.

Thanks, Mark.

So we were both NJ raised, jazz players and fans. Trumpet & valve trombone here. Small groups in HS, college, Army and after discharge. After, just me and records. Now, just listen very frequently.

Thanks for the interesting reply.
Be well,
