While enjoying the warmer weather (61 F) at about 6:00 PM PDT the chickens and ducks started running towards me. Looked back; lo and behold a Hoot Owl! I noticed how the critters in the area responded. The chickens watched the owl, after untangling themselves from my legs! The ducks "ducked" into their respective hooches.

Seven Stellar's Jays arrived to harass the owl. My standing around probably caused the jays to limit their attacks to darting lunges at the owl and a cacophonous, forest-filling noise aimed at moving the owl out of "their" territory. It is mating/nest-building time after all.

The Song Sparrow and Mourning Dove were the only small birds willing to brave the owl-the rest had left for the Territories!

D850, 300pF attached. This glass is not particularly happy in low-light. Struggled to focus and would not track very well. Will give it a try on my Z9. Not the clearest, sharpest set I have posted.

Download and enjoy!

Nice captures. The hoot owl looks very much like the barred owl (which frequents my backyard).

Thanx! As the Stellar’s Jays were dive-bombing it puffed its feathers and shut its eyes as the Jays did not close their attacks.
