Both have their pro's and con's. Good points and bad. It's a non-subject just like Cannon vs. Nikon.

I will withhold comment on smarter. It was a $ decision for me… being able to shop for parts and build or upgrade my PCs , at home, since the early 1980s. Would never consider something I couldn’t build from parts. I have used Macs, over the years, several times… in a work environmental… frustrating because not familiar. By the way, I do most things in Windows but still pop up a DOS/CMD window for some things… just quicker to do what I need.

I have several, maybe 8 years, of UNIX experience at work… with a variety of computer types.

Macs are based on BSD Unix, so fire up the Terminal.app and load your UNIX favorites.

I guess I could mortgage my house to buy a Mac. Would have to keep my LG 34” display.

Best thing I remember about UNIX is the version numbers built in to file name extension. Sure helped configuration control on code files.

Macs are more reasonably priced these days than you might think — and a LOT more powerful.

M2 Mac mini: $999.00
Apple M2 system-on-a-chip with 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine
16GB unified memory (plenty for Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, and most other software)
512GB SSD storage (add more externally via Thunderbolt 3, 4, or USB-C devices)
Gigabit Ethernet
Two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI port, two USB-A ports, headphone jack

It works with existing mice, keyboards, monitors, speakers, web cameras, disc burners, etc.

When I got a MacBook last year I was using a Windows laptop with a wireless Logitech trackball. The trackball came with two channels and I was able to attach it to my MacBook using the second channel and Bluetooth. So at the touch of a button I could use the trackball with either the MacBook or the Windows laptop.

I prefer the trackball because it requires less desktop space and my desk was usually cluttered with stuff, not just papers. However, I would expect there are other items that could be used interchangeably with either platform.

My monitors also work on either platform, just using a HDMI cable. No experience with mice or keyboards. The web camera is built into both laptops. Haven't burnt a disk in a couple years.

PC keyboards usually work on Macs, but there are some keys that don't map correctly. Generally, Control is CTRL, Option is ALT, and Command Key is Windows Key.

For years I ran Win XP in Parallels Desktop emulation software on a MacBook Pro, and had no trouble using all my peripherals across platform with one caveat: Disk drive formats require special consideration. You have to use ExFAT if you want to share a drive across platforms. JUST DON'T UNPLUG IT WITHOUT UN-MOUNTING IT. That will give you a VERY bad headache!
