Canon M6 Mark ii Bulb mode

Hello everyone.

I was having problems with my camera in manual as every once in a while it would just automatically shift to bulb mode. I had no idea why. I went to the instruction manual learned how to turn it off and did. No more problems for a while. Now it is happening again. Not all the time, just sometimes. I checked the menu and saw no change in the settings.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how or if they fixed it?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

What exactly is 'bulb mode?' Do you mean B on the shutter speed setting? Should be simple enough to fix by setting another value as the shutter speed. Good luck.

Thanks, twowindsbear

That is exactly what it is. The problem is, I set the exposure for, say, 1/250th, go to take the shot, and the camera automatically resets it to bulb mode. Now this only happens, generally anyway, in lower light. But not that low. I just don't have time to adjust and readjust, especially if a bird is about to fly away, or a butterfly, or whatever. If I want bulb mode, I want to set it to bulb mode. Not happen automatically.

Interesting problem. I would recommend calling Canon Tech Support at 800-652-2666. They are very good. Good luck.

I presume you have the camera set to "M".

Do you have Custom Function I-6 "Safety Shift" enabled?

This will override your settings if the camera "thinks" they are incorrect. If you were to set a low ISO and a small lens aperture in low light conditions, the camera might put itself in Bulb if Safety Shift is enabled. In other words, your exposure settings would need to be way, waaaaaayyyy off for it to take it to that extreme.

In C.Fn I-6...

O is disabled.
1 enables it on shutter speed and aperture setting
2 enables it only on ISO

Page 533 in the user manual.

This is the only thing I can think of that can change camera settings without your intervention.

Bulb doesnt seem like a "safety" reaction since its an indeterminant exposure ....

If C1 or C2 is still as-shipped use that for a while cuz there are no user settings set yet. If the Bulb thing still happens youll know its not due to how you have set up your camera. Then you need a repair. OTOH, if the problem never arises in the C-mode, then you know that somehow your settings are causing it.

Thanks, I have used C1 and C2 at times, but I'll do more checking out on this.

Still worth a try even if those are no longer virgin. If *something* youve set produces the problem, theres always a possibility that you didnt include that *something* in the C-mode set ups.

If one of the C-mode set ups has no important long term value, you could return it to "as-shipped" for use in your diagnostic testing.

You can also try updating to, or simply reloading, the latest firmware. That has worked for me but only once out of two different problems).

Thanks User ID

While I have used C1 and C2 I do not know whether the problem happened at that time. It may take me a few days before I get a chance to work with the camera again, but I will soon.

Thank you
