Just returned ( a month ago) from 2 weeks birding in Cuba. Very good trip, lots of friendly people, living a very interesting life 90 miles from our shores.

We were stationed in GTMO Cuba in the Navy.
Not the same of course, two twelve foot parallel razor topped fences with the world's largest active mine-field in between. With observation towers spaced every one half mile. And armed observers from each side staring at each other.
But the SCUBA divers used to swim around the end of the fences and grab a rock or sea shell from the Cuban side for souvenirs
The diving was GREAT!
