Another antique: This time an old ironing machine from the porch of my favorite BBQ restaurant. Comments are always welcome.

These were known as mangle irons. Locally, a now defunct handkerchief manufacturer used these extensively to prepare for packaging.

When I was growing up we had one. Mom used it on sheets, pillow cases etc. She called it a mangler. She ironed everything including underwear, socks and handkerchiefs.

My mom did the same - and had us little ones helping with it - I found out that you only iron your fingers once LOL
The hard part was getting the creases in dads military shirts correctly - if they weren't correct, we had to wet the shirts and run them through the drier to ensure there were no creases and do it over...

Yup, I walked the same walk, ours was in the basement. Beat hand ironing for sure, just feed the item in as the barrel rotated and it pulled it in and it came out FLAT. Had to Watch where my hands wandered to.

My mother-in-law had one too. I was always fascinated at how it came to be called a “mangle”. Doesn’t that mean it messes up the ironing?

I was told the name came from mangled fingers. Another version was that the inventor / producer was named Mangle, and subsequent injuries /fought the term “mangled” to describe an injury into use.
