The phrase "One if by Land, Two if by Sea was meant to warn residents that British Regulars were on the move and heading to Concord Massachusetts to seize a cache of weapons .That night 2 lanterns were briefly lit to signal the Brits were taking the sea route which actually was the Charles River.
