My 300 f/4, and 17-35 f/2.8 lenses are both D's and each works with my Z cameras, but they're both AF-S lenses. They appear to be an exception to the "D" rule.

There is no "D" rule, just a lot of misunderstanding.

I still have my 17-35 but traded the 300 for the lighter/smaller 'pf' version.

The 100-400 Z already gets to 1:2.6 without an extension tube. Add a tube and it will really get close.

The extension tubes give me a shorter minimum focus distance.

I agree with the fact that there are likely too many "alphabets" on Nikon's lenses. And the confusion arose around the comments that "D" lenses would not A-F with Z cameras. My comment was to EL_NIKKOR about my two lenses which are AF-S lenses, still carried the "D" for "Distance" nomenclature on the barrel. EL_NIKKOR responded that he did not know that. Just providing info.
