This May there will still be skiing. Even Snow Basin up Ogden Canyon just reported that it is extending it’s season into late April, the latest closure ever. Promontory Point, Willard Bird refuge, Hill Air Force Base Museum and the Bison herd on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake provide photo ops along I-80 in Northern Utah.

Salt Lake has Red Butte Gardens, the Natural History Museum and the Tabernacle Choir practices and performances. Temple Square usually has beautiful gardens but it is currently undergoing a massive renovation project. Park City is 30 minutes East of Salt Lake and is a fun ski resort town with a mining heritage. Normally Sundance up Provo Canyon and the Alpine Loop drive are beautiful, but the late snow volumes will likely make them less enjoyable.

5-8 hrs outside Salt Lake, Southern Utah has the red rock national parks. Magnificent, famous and crowded. From Ogden, the Tetons are 4 hrs away and Yellowstone is 5-6 hrs away. I love then all.

Utah is one of largest states in landmass. It's hard to know where to direct you without knowing what you like to photograph. To help you with your Ogden trip, I'll give you approximate mileage and directions from Ogden to some of Utah's most photographic areas.

From Ogden to the . . .
Great Salt Lake - about an hour south and west
Great Salt Lake Marina - about an hour and a half south and west I-15 south to 1-80
Salt Lake City - one hour south on 1-15 to see Temple Square, which may have spring flowers surrounding it; to go to one of the two major ski resort canyons, Big or Little Cottonwood Canyon, stay on on I-5 when you get to Salt Lake City and then in about 15 minutes exit on 1-215 east. Then take 2000 East exit, drive a couple blocks south to Fort Union Blvd and turn left or east and you are on your way to Big Cottonwood Canyon home of Brighton and Solitude ski resorts, a 30 minute drive. Ask someone for directions to Little Cottonwood Canyon in that area. Too intricate to explain in this forum. The canyons should be starting to get beautiful in April. However, snow may still be there.
Helper City, UT, Carbon County - the center of Utah's coal mining region. A 3-hour drive. Start on I-15 south to Spanish Fork exit to U.S. Highway 6. Then travel another 60 miles. Helper is renovating its buildings the way they were in the 1920s and 1930s when Italian, Greek, Mexican and Austrian immigrants and Mormon settlers settled here to work in the mines and the railroad. About 5 miles before entering Helper, you will pass through a beautiful canyon - Price Canyon - where you'll see the start of the Book Cliff Mountains at around Castle Gate.
Moab City, Grand County- 5 hours drive. Take I-15 south to Spanish Fork exit to U.S. Highway 6. Stay on U.S. 6 until you get to Green River, UT follow the signs to Moab, Grand County, to see redrock country at its finest. There is Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point - a beautiful scenic perch and a state park; and Canyonlands National Park - more beautiful red rock and overviews of the rivers dumping into the Colorado River system.
If you'd like more info, let me know.

One that is less known and off the beaten path, but a photographer’s dream: Goblin Valley State Park.

How far do you want to drive? You could spend your whole life in Utah and never see it all! And even if you did, it would be worth doing it all over again! I used to live in Moab, but the whole State is WOW!!!

So true. The state has everything and the OP won't be disappointed, assuming a guide book is consulted prior to visit, to ensure his particular interests are addressed .

Assuming that you'll be able to drive down to south-central Utah, I would heartily recommend Sandra Hinchman's Hiking the Southwest Canyon Country. It seems she's been just about everywhere and done just about everything. Don't let the word 'Hiking' fool you here; she does describe a hike of several days' duration in chest deep water, but I've never done any of that; in fact, I've done very little of her hikes. Ninety-nine percent of what I've taken from her book has been driving to an overlook, getting out, and shooting, shooting, shooting. I did drive around the White Rim Road in Canyonlands National Park, a 2-4 day drive with tenting each night, and it was lovely, but that was my fourth trip. The scenery is wild!

If you take the Promintory point rout stay on the main road hwy 83 going north and it will take you to Northrup Grumman rocket garden.
This is where the Space shuttle boosters were produced under the Thiokol name. The garden contains lots of different rocket moters including a full size shuttle booster.

As mentioned, Logan Canyon to the summit and down to the Bear Lake view point. Beautiful. In Logan stop at Gossners Cheese on 1000 West for some fresh curds. Just west of Corrinne there is a rocket display. It is where the space shuttle rockets among many others were and are built. Can't remember the company name. It used to be Thiokle. There will still be snow in the canyons.

I’ve made the drive from Salt Lake to Logan hundreds of times. The drive through Sardine Canyon and up Logan Canyon can be beautiful and the Bear Lake overview is spectacular. Bear Lake is a pristine aquamarine blue. This pathway is generally used as a route to Jackson and Yellowstone. If you are in good shape and the snow has melted, take an extra couple of hours in Logan Canyon and hike The Wind Caves or the Limber Pine Trail which is flatter. Make sure you take your camera.

Yes, check out Rooster's Brewery in downtown: 253 25th St, Ogden, UT 84401
They have great beer and sandwiches. I have been there twice of a 6 year period. It is a must eat and taste place.
