Sometimes there are things that simply cannot be seen any other way. This is a focus-stacked image of the tiny leaves of a nettle viewed under 6X magnification.

They appear to be smooth to the unaided eye yet under magnification they are far from smooth. This image shows the leaves are covered with epidermal hair which is referred to as trichome.

Beautiful Sippy as usual. Are those sharp little things what causes the sting?

Curmudgeon, these are not stinging nettles. These are purple dead nettles that are often used to make tea and to serve medical needs. The hairs are not visible to the unaided eye and they serve a variety of purposes including enhancing ultraviolet light to attract pollinators.

Thanks, Kpmac. What appears to be smooth leaves are in fact far from it.

Thanks, Elliott. This is what they look like with a normal macro view to compare to the 6X magnification view.

Fantastic.

"Trichomes" is correct, and it looks like the type of trichome there is uniseriate - a single vertical row of cells. The configuration of the trichomes on this plant is called "hispid" - relatively long, straight and closely spaced tricomes.

Plants that emerge and bloom early often depend upon ants for pollination when flying pollinators are not active, and the hairy leaves help the plant retain heat.
