Good morning "huggers". Hope you are all well and safe!
I have recently acquired an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III with a 100-400mm 5.0-6.3 Zuiko zoom. I would like to find a good "exploring" or "discovering" or "guide to" or "mastering" book for this equipment - just the camera.
I have had one recommendation from a friend for a "Mastering ..." by Darrel Young. I am wondering if any of you shoot with this configuration and can recommend this, or any other book. I am an experienced photographer and my main interest is birding.
I would appreciate any help in this direction that you can provide, especially if you have actually used the book. I have been shooting Nikon Equipment since late 60's (started with FTN) but recently had to reduce the load that have been carrying due to back strain.
Best and good shooting from the attached Golden-fronted Woodpecker !
Not currently at home but for my EM1 MKII I use a Rocky Nook (publisher) book that is very complete. I am sure there is a similar update for the MK III.
In the meantime, A good way to learn is to set up the SCP and go through all the options. Then start using it every day. You will learn the basics quickly.

JFCoupe and your friend are correct. "Mastering Olympus OM-D E-M1 MarkIII" by Darrel Young from Rocky Nook. It is by far one of the best if not the best. Also, Rocky Nook also makes "Olympus OM-D E-M1 MarkIII Pocket Guide". I carry that with me for extra backup to my memory. It has proved valuable on my European trips. Do not have the 100-400. But I do have the 300. Both the 1.4X and 2X teleconverters work well with my 300. I have heard that the 1.4X teleconverter works well with the 100-400 but the image softens a little with the 2X teleconverter. Ideally for you would be the 7-14 f2.8 Pro Olympus (or 7-14 f4 Panasonic) and the 12-100 f4 Pro IS Olympus with your 100-400 plus 1.4X teleconverter. That system should be under 15 pounds, backpack, accessories, and all.

And JD750 is correct about the SCP (Super Control Panel). The SCP brings up all the common or most used functions on the back screen for easy picking while you learn the scroll menu. With these two menus, you will have control of a camera like no other camera on the market (other than Olympus/OMDS). Eventually you will migrate up to the OM-1. It really is that much better especially for birding. But have fun with your new E-M1 mkIII for now. We hope to see some of the photos from your shooting.
i find both Buschs and Youngs books to be about equal or "equally best". I have Youngs book for the EM1mk2 cuz Busch apparently doesnt cover OM.
Theres one detail difference for which I prefer Buschs books. It not the content, its the clarity of the type face. YMMV.
Another vote for Darryl Young and also for the pocket guide.
Thank you for all who replied. All the best !
Would these guide books be applicable to the Olympus E-M10 M111 ?
Thanks. I have had the camera for about 4 years and still have a difficult time remembering all the short cuts. It is in the repair shop right now as the EV has failed.

No. I would not even recommend a book across differing "mark" levels (I, II, III, etc) of any same model number (EM-10, -5, -1 etc). $45 is a lotta money for the wrong book. An EM-10 is nothing like an EM-1. Theres an EM-5 in between them.
Thank you, I do have the 168 page User Manuel
