anyone know of any free apps that will back up my external drives that I keep my photos on? I need it to work on a MBP with the M2 chip

Time Machine is included with the Apple OS and should do exactly what you want.

Time Machine is already on your MBP. I use TM to back up my hard drive and my 2 externals. TM has saved me much grief when I had an external full of photos go bad and could not be mounted or read. I restored its contents to a fresh external with TM quickly and with absolute ease.
