Ooma - No Phone

I can't say I'm surprised. After connecting the Ooma box and waiting three days for my number to be transferred from Spectrum, I cannot receive phone calls. As I said, I'm not surprised.

Next to my computer, I have the router and two modems - one for the computer and one for the phone. That's what Spectrum requires. All the network ports on the router a used, so I'm using a network switch which is across the room. The Ooma box can connect to both power and network there, but it can't connect to the phone.

I ordered another network switch which I'll put next to the router. That will give me access to power, network, and the phone connection. I have two phone wires to plug in, and they spread in different directions through the house. When I get both of them connected to Ooma, I should be able to receive calls.

On the other hand, how perfect is this? The phone never rings!

I can make calls with all the phones, so I guess they're all turned on. I'm just plugged into Ooma, yet I can make phone calls through the Spectrum modem. Life has gotten too complicated.

Two thoughts Jerry:
Spectrum can provide a single modem with one IP port and two RJ45 phone ports if you can’t get the Ooma to work
Have you tried plugging the Ooma directly into the router without the switch?

The router ports are all full. I found a router, and I might try using that as a switch. The thing is that I need the Ooma, the network, electricity, and the phone wires all in one place.

Actually, since I won't be using the router that used to connect to the phones, I could use that as a switch. Maybe. What's funny is that the Ooma recorded a message on its answering machine.

I didn’t mean to hook it to the router permanently - just as a test. Since you found a message on the Ooma, do you think that maybe Spectrum is still answering your calls as well as the Ooma, and it just depends on who gets to it first? Maybe once Spectrum disconnects the phone service, the Ooma will work.

Btw, if you’re going to use another router instead of a switch, make sure the WIFI (if it has it) is disabled so it doesn’t interfere with your main router. If it has WiFi and you need to disable it, plug a computer directly into one of its Ethernet ports, then open a browser and enter 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.0.1 if that doesn’t work). That will usually take you to the admin console for the router. It will ask you for the PW, which you may have already set, but if not, do a hard reset of the router (most have a small button you push with a pen tip), and then Google the 2nd router by name and model, and you can find the default PW. It will also tell you the default IP address after reset if the ones above don’t work. Once in, disable the WIFI, save the settings and back out.

Is that TMI? (Too much information)

Do you have the 10 digit number enabled...if not it takes 11 numbers to dial out.

Call your # from a cell phone and as it rings pick up your phone. If you can answer it then call spectrum and let them know your problem.if you can't answer your phone then hang up and with your phone call your cell to identify the #.you may have a wrong #.

Most of the calls we receive show up as "Spam Risk," so I just pick up and hang up.

Since my number was transferred from Spectrum to Ooma, I think Spectrum is now out of the picture. I have a lot of Cat6 cable and connectors, so I can run a line across the room from the Ooma to the router. We'll just have to be careful not to trip over it.

Right now, the two phone lines are plugged into the Spectrum router. The Ooma is connected to the switch, and its phone wire is plugged into a wall socket.

I think I'm going to sell the house and start with a new one. 🤣

Rather than experiment, I might wait until the new switch and phone splitter arrive. I've looked up how to use a router as a switch, so I might try that later.

If you don't want to trip over it place a throw rug over it and there is no chance of a fire since it is low voltage or you can take that wire up through the attic like I do.

If the phone never rings then you shouldn't be bothered by all the spoofed number scam calls. OTOH, your description of what you have needed to get everything connected and all the processes completed I think I'll stick with Breezeline (formerly Atlantic Broadband). They come in, put in the equipment and make all the connections. Then they make sure everything is working corerectly before leaving. If I have problems they come out and fix it. Unless it is something that I have messed up (doubtful since I do not change anything) there is no charge. I may pay a bit more but I like the convenience of not having to do it myself and then needing someone to fix what I couldn't and then charging me for it.

So BOTH the router and the Ooma is hooked to the phone line?

Well, maybe not. The regular two phone lines are still plugged into the spectrum modem, but Spectrum is no longer providing me with phone service. With a phone connected to the Ooma, and the Ooma plugged into a wall socket, that phone now rings. I have to get the main phones connected to the Ooma box. With the regular phones plugged into the Spectrum modem, I can make calls but not receive them. With the one phone plugged into the Ooma box, I have normal service.

Have had mostly good luck with Ooma. If you get too much of a delay in the conversation you can ask them to provide with more bandwidth on their end. That should help with the delay issue anyway. I’ve had t a long time, so my price is just the local fees of about $8.50 a month. I think it’s quite a bit higher now.
