Here's an excellent story that describes how Glen Canyon Dam was almost lost back in 1983.

we spent some fifty years boating lake powell, from the later 60's til we sold out boat in 2009 because i "aged-out". in the early days the coves and canyons were filledwith cottonwoods and many other trees bushes etc. they all disappeared as the lake rose. our favorite coves were in rock creek if it were a short 3-4 day trip, but our #1 was "our own cove" 30 miles up the san juan river passed occasionaly by a bass boat going up river or the ear-shattering ""black planes", zero markings of dany kind that would follow the various bends of the river at 400-500 ' off the river surface.looked great fun to those pilots! sad to see some old areas gone to boating but lovely to see so many areas reappearing to explore - and photograph. wee took many of our grandkids along over the years and many remain enthralled with fishing, camping and hiking the great outdoors. (their parents did none of the above!)
