I watched an entertaining show last night featuring Sir Stirling Moss and the restoration a 1962 Austin-Healey Sprite that he raced. I had the MG version of that, a 1962 MG Midget. That was a great little car. When I was younger, I followed racing in Road & Track and Car and Driver magazines. Stirling Moss was a great driver, winning eighty-four races. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2020 at the age of 90.

The team worked on putting the car back into original condition, and then Stirling came to an event at a car museum and drove it. The show (Car S.O.S.) was on the Nat Geo section of Disney+. I'm watching everything I want before canceling it.

Yes, all of them - the pre-B, anyway.

I had a "bug-eye" Sprite, and then an MG-B - which I loved!!! (Had to put a rubber glove on the distributor of the Sprite, else going through a small puddle of water with the left front wheel caused a considerable wait!)

I watched him win the British Grand Prix at Aintree in England in 1957 driving a Vanwall. He was one helluva driver. Never won a F1 championship because he preferred to drive British cars.

My high school buddy wanted an MG so bad...or a Triumph ...either one would do.

Problem was...he was a 6'4" with a hulk frame.
I went with him one day...he found one he could afford...and fix up.

It broke my heart (sort of...I was 16)...to watch him squirm and squiggle...trying desperately to fit into the car.
It was something from a sitcom...or circus.

He was still a bit delusional when he said ... I can take the seat frame out and weld it all the way back.

I just shook my head slowly...saying...Chuck...Chuck.

I'll bet he got one later on in life... Just to punish himself a bit.

Sounds a lot like my early life experience. My first sports car was a used red 52MG with a British made Shorrock supercharger. The supercharger came off when I had to replace the main bearings in the engine. You see the main bearings were not designed to take the abuse of the supercharger . . . so I was told by MG mechanics. My next sports car was a new 59 Triumph TR-3 with the Norman-Laycock overdrive. Wow . . . those were the days.

I bought a messy 1952 MG TD in about 1970 and put it back in shape. I covered a lot of miles in that car. It was totally reliable.

I also had a 60's era Midget. Don't remember the exact year but it still had the twin carbs and wire knock-off wheels. It was the most fun piece of junk to drive I've ever owned.

I had two bug eyes (and a host of other British cars) - both fun and a real POS. I had some real “adventures” driving between Alabama and NC in the middle of the night, over the mountains, in the winter with no side curtains or top or heater while in the military.

As for Sir Stirling, he was one of the greats among those such as Juan Fangio and Jimmy Clark. The post about a Vanwall took me back to my early teen years when I also started religiously reading R&T, Car and Driver (before it became the truncated rag it is today) and Sports Car Graphic. It all started when my father picked me up from Jr. high in a shiny new black XK150S drop head with red leather and chrome wires - I was hooked for life.

I was born and raised in Southern California. In the period roughly from 1950 to 1970 there were several sports car road racing courses within easy driving distance: Riverside, Pomona, Willow Springs, Santa Barbara, Paramount and Palm Springs. I watched races at all of them - and others, and pit crewed for a friend (gentleman racer) with an MG TD. I was fortunate to be able to watch many of the best drivers in the world, with some amazing equipment - incuding: Stirling Moss, Masten Gregory, Carroll Shelby, Walt Hansgen, Phill Hill, Richie Ginther, Bill Krause, Chuck Daigh, Max Balchowsky, Roger Penske, Lance Reventlow, Ken Miles, and my favorite, Dan Gurney. Another favorite was Ken Miles, in his #50 Porsche - every lap the same line! At Riverside, I saw the first race, in September 1957, and a number after that. Unfortunately, Riverside International Raceway eventually gave way to a housing development, but while it existed it attracted many of the very best, and there were some legendary races there. I never raced (though I did race motocross), but really enjoyed watching, and did own an Austin Healey Sprite, an MG B, a Datsun 260 Z and a Lancia Beta Coupe. Those were the days!!!

Wow! You’ve seen some of the greats and my favorites. Being on the east coast, my SCCA, IMSA and F1 race viewings were limited to Watkins Glen, VIR, Road Atlanta and Marlborough (now gone). I was lucky enough to be involved with SCCA as a tech inspector and corner worker as well as crewing for a BMW IMSA team. Great times!

Btw, as I recall, Stirling Moss was considered the “rainmeister” because of his talent and fearlessness in the wet. I remember his crash at Goodwood that ended his memorable career.
