Tamron 150-600mm f5-6.3 VR G1 - Nikon

I have now purchased/owned two (older model) Tamron 150-600mm F-mount lens. Neither lens would auto focus using the "Shutter Release Button", but would only auto focus using the "Back Button Focus". Is this how these older Tamron 150-600mm models work or am I missing something very simple, or complex? I have tried both lens on three different Nikon cameras (D700, D3 & D4) with the same result. All three cameras work perfectly with other Nikon, Tokina & Tamron lens, using the Shutter Release Button.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Walter

I had that version and used it on at least 3 Nikon models (D5200, D7200, andD500) with no issues like you're describing, but I've never used BBF. All of those are crop sensor cameras, while the 3 with which you're having issues are all FF. I'm wondering if it could be a firmware issue with the 1st generation of that lens. I bought my lens back in October of 2014. Why not give Tamron a call and speak with someone there? Do you know someone with the 2nd generation of that lens? If so, you might be able to do a quick test of the 2nd generation on your cameras. If no problem, my guess is a firmware update is needed. If memory serves, that 1st version did not come with a TapIn console, so firmware updates were done by sending the lens in to Tamron.

The first generation is full frame and I use it on a d750 and had no issues with it at first with shutter release and then using BBF, I would venture to say it is a camera setting and not a lens issue, but then again I could be wrong.

Please let us all know the cause of the issue, as well as the solution. Most of us learn something from these situations.
