I am new to photoshop and have not used any editing software previously. I therefore need to learn from scratch about layers, masks, filters ... In fact the whole lot .I was wondering the best way to do this? Can anyone recommend a book or tutorials they have used?

I just google the effect, action, etc that I want to learn, and either read a written tutorial about it, or watch something on youtube.

The best way to learn it is by doing it. There are some good free tutorials on-line but they can only offer a guide line.

Try Adobe's tutorials. You could also subscribe to their magazine which is actually very good.

YouTube and Abobe TV are two good places to go for free. Google will also get hits for answers to questions. There are also maNy course offerings some free and some charging a fee. I can't offer any advise on a good book but suggest trying Amazon for titles the Google them to see what others are saying about them.

There are lots of ways of achieving ones aims in PS Elements. Decide what you want to achieve then use guided edits.
Lots of tutorials on Youtube not much use until you learn a bit about the software.
Just have fun and be prepared for some setbacks.

I recommend using Lynda.com for training on any software. She charges $25 for a monthly membership and allows you full access to all of the training videos.

Also,YouTube is full of tutorials for PSE all versions, even older version tutorials still apply to PSE 11.

 That's the way to go. In one quick go I found and downloaded 13 hours worth of videos for Lightroom. I burnt them to DVD's and can watch in leisure on the TV. You will find videos for Elements there as well as photo and other software.

Well You-Tube can help but I tell you I took and online Continuing Education Course of: Photoshop Elements 10 for the Digital Photographer & Photoshop Elements 10 for the Digital Photographer II from Middle Ga Technical College through Ed2go. I recommend these online courses they really helped me tremendously. for the price of only $99.00 US $ IS A GREAT DEAL.

Adobe knows it's products pretty well, and it knows that if people like using them, they will come back for more. The result: excellent instruction. Take a look here.
