We have 2 upcoming trips, Scandinavia by cruise ship plus land extensions (May 2023), Galapagos and Machu Picchu (September 2023) and need camera advise please. We have 2 current model Samsung S22/S23 cameras. EOS70D with a bag full of lenses, Sony RX100VI, OLympus TG-4 (for Galapagos only). The only real question is do I take the EOS70D? I am not a professional photographer and will likely post pictures but not publish them.

I travel light: body with 18-200; and a 50 just in case.

It depends on what you want to take.

I've been to both places...but not on a ship in Scandinavia. Land only.

If I were going on a photo-centric trip, such as Iceland or Africa, I would take a lot of photo gear. But, if I was going on vacation, say to Sweden and Peru, I would probably take the TG and the Sony...skip the rest. I took my M43 gear to Peru, got great shots. But it was a pain in the neck to carry. I think the Sony would be darn'd near perfect. I can say that Peru is the best place I have been for street photography. So that might change your mind a bit if you want to bring more gear. Start up time is important in street photography, IMO. But, if you are after memories, then go small. Skip all tripods. Sony, TG and your phone.

I am not afraid to travel to difficult or dangerous places where others may not feel ok...like Johannesburg. But, I gotta say, the political thing in Peru right now demands some attention...people are pretty upset about the government, have destroyed some train tracks, etc. You need to keep on top of this before you go. Our neighbors just postponed for a year. Sad deal.

(BTW, I have an interesting place to stay in Lima...the residence of Peru's famous artist, Victor DelFin. Pm me if you're interested in details.)

Wise decision to go to the Galapagos. We failed to do that and went into the Amazon instead...big mistake.

The big thing, IMO, is to be able to process the shots a bit...that will make all the difference in the world. The camera is secondary.

I would take them all, but for the EOS only take one or two lenses depending on what you have. I'd want from wide to medium for excursions and some tele from ship to shore shots. For excursions I'd probably leave the tele on the ship or in the hotel. For more strenuous excursions I'd just carry the RX100. This may mean take the 70D to Scandinavia and only the RX when you go to Peru.

On our trips where baggage was very limited and I was not in control of much, I went seriously light and flexible: Nikon P900 and Canon SX710 backup (Alaska, Galapagos, Costa Rica, etc.), lots of SD cards and extra batteries plus chargers.

I'd only take the Sony RX100 plus a recent iPhone for Peru. The nice thing about your Scandinavian cruise is that you can leave gear in your room. On the cruises I'm going to take this year to Australia and Africa, I'm going to take the "Holy Trinity" of three fixed-length Fujinon lenses, each weighing 5-7 ounces; a 10-24mm zoom (15-36mm eq) weighing 14 ounces, and 18-135 mm zoom (27-200mm eq) weighing 17 ounces. The entire outfit fits into a Tamron bag that fits inside my carry-on, along with my meds. When off the ship, I only carry a lens mounted on my camera and one lens in my pocket. My wife shoots with only an iPhone 14 and can match me shot-for-shot in most situations. In bad weather, at the beach, or in dicey areas, the rule is: "Don't change lenses except indoors."
