I recently purchased the Olympus Tough TG-6 camera. I plan on using it kayaking, snorkeling and in the pool. I know it's waterproof, but I was if anyone has had any has had any problems with it. I was considering buying the to buy the PT-09 Underwater Housing, but I'm not sure that it is really needed for my use. Thanks, Lou

I have a TG-5 and use it primarily as a bad weather or salt water boating camera. I've not yet fully submersed it.

The TG-6 is "Waterproof to 15m (45ft), shockproof from 2.1m (7ft), crushproof to 100kgf (220lbf), freezeproof to -10°C (14°F), dustproof"

The Olympus PT-059 underwater housing, made exclusively for the TG-6, can withstand pressure to a water depth of 45 m (150ft).

How deep is your pool and how deep do you snorkel? Be sure to read the instructions that explain the gaskets and how the water sealing works.

It’s a decent camera for underwater, but I found that the Go Pro Hero10 worked much better for me when snorkeling. It handles better with the extension pole and I think the clarity is better on the Hero.
The only real problem I had with the TG-6 is that underwater, the view screen is difficult to see. I had no trouble with the waterproofing aspects of the Olympus, but handling it while moving in the water was awkward while still trying to see what the screen was showing me.
As far as an underwater housing for the TG-6 goes, Unless you’re a diver, I wouldn’t bother. Not many people can free dive while snorkeling down to 45ft.

Thank You. I won't be going deeper than 20 feet, I'm not a diver. Most of the time only a few feet. I was wanting to know if anyone experienced any leaks or damage to the camera after taking it under water a few feet. I hadn't considered that it may be awkward to use under water. I'll definitely keep that in mind. Thank you for responding, Lou

Thank you. The only reason I considered buying the PT-059 underwater housing was for extra protection. I'm not a diver and will only be going very deep. I do plan on using a lot on my kayak. Thanks for your input, Lou

Thank you for responding. Sounds like I'll be ok using it under water, especially since I will only be under water a few feet. Most the time I'll be using it on my kayak. Thanks again, Lou

Thank you to those who responded and to those who suffered through my poorly written question and replies. I do apologize for not taking the time to proofread before hitting the send button. I made a lot of mistakes in my rush to post the question and to answer everyone who responded. It doesn't pay to rush. I'm getting ready to go on a cruise and plan on using the Tough TG-6 on my excursions. I'm signed up for snorkeling and a Sea Trek Helmet Dive. If I decide to use the camera underwater, I'll post a few pictures. Thanks again everyone, Lou.

I have used a TG-1 since it came out. I have snorkeled with it many times, gone into the pool many times and have never had a problem with it. I very much like the color rendering of Olympus. A reminder to set the mode when snorkeling. The filter will be of great help with the colors under water. My only complaint with it is that in bright sunlight it is near impossible to see the viewing screen and many time I was guessing, not composing.

Have a great trip.

I am sure there have been leaks and damage from improper use and improper care. I have heard of extremely few leakage problems otherwise (I heard of one; I still question about its care). There will always be a camera or two out of a 100,000 or more that will fail (and not just the TG-6). That is why we pay the "extra" money for the US warranty rather than buy gray market.

Since 1975, I have owned Olympus, Hasselblad, and Canon. I had my first warranty failure last year when my newest lens, after about ten months of use, would not communicate with my camera bodies. Sent back for warranty repair and now back on camera and working. I guess there is a chance that there could be a failure again in the next 50 years. As long as it occurs close to the end of the next 50 years, I will not care much - I'll be dead by then.

As long as you take proper care of the TG-6, you should have no failures.

I'm the author of "The Compleat Olympus TOUGH TG-4 & TG-850 Cameras" (Amazon, 2015). In roughly six months of use, I never had a problem with the TG-4, and everything I've seen since then indicates that the TG-6 is unlikely to present problems with its seals and weatherproofing. It's merely a problem of how deep the cameras can go without the seals breaking down. As I remember, the conservative answer is "about 50 feet." I also recommend the TOUGH cameras as ideal for elementary schoolers and some in preschool. These cameras border on indestructible, and the photos in the book demonstrate their quality.

Thanks, that's good to know. I take good care of my equipment and plan to do the same with the TG-6. Thanks for the feedback, Lou.

Great camera. Ive used it in a pool with no problem. The locking mechanism for the SD card and battery is a little wonky but it works well.
