Im looking for camera insurance. One company quoted $589. a year . Thats crazy.
another wouldnt go over $3000. which doesnt help much with a 6k camera and 2k lense.

i dont want to go with a home owners rider. Here in Fla insurance companies will drop you for any little claim.

so what are you using, how much and how was filing a claim.

I have Allstate for about $20k, all based on receipts. Annual cost is around $300 with a $250 deductible, based on memory.

I tried to put a rider on my homeowners and the insurance company would not do it.

My home-owners insurance company, AMICA, charges me just over $100 for 18,000 and no deductible. Purchase receipts required. I have had two claims in the past five years totaling $2,700 and received checks within five days of submitting repair estimates.

I have a separate policy with my regular insurer. But you are in Florida so you are screwed.
I do mine through All State, they have a copy of my receipts that show serial numbers and when it was bought.
They will replace any item stolen or lost at current replacement costs. Yes, it is more expensive that a rider but it covers my equipment better. And I have a lot more than you do and do not pay anything close to what you were quoted.

Try to find a personal property policy.
State Farm has a personal property policy I use, sure other companies have something similar.

The OP problem is that he lives in Florida. All the major insurance companies have left Florida including State Farm.

Yes, a lot of lesser known companies have left Florida for various reasons. However, it is NOT TRUE that State Farm has left Florida. You can get a State Farm Homeowners policy in Florida. You have to do research!

I added it to my USAA personal insurance (VPP, Valuable Personal Property) for about $70/year, cover's wife's jewelry, my weapons and cameras, etc, all valued at ~$12,000....I consider this money well spent AND I live in Florida.

However I have photographed each and every item for documentary purposes, if a claim is needed.

My personal property policy with State Farm isn’t a rider, it’s a separate policy. Cheap if you’re an amateur.

I have a no deductible personal property policy thru State Farm with a $199 annual premium for about $14K of equipment. Four or five years ago, I had a claim for about $400. I called SF and they sent me a check, no questions or proof asked.

And no depreciation either. I have the same thing but haven’t had to make a claim. Didn’t have a receipt for my film SLR so the agent looked it up on eBay and used that as the value.

I too had State Farm's personal articles policy, along with homeowner's and auto. It's a separate policy from homeowner's. After a $400 repair claim for a dropped camera and an $800 claim for a stolen one a couple of years later, State Farm canceled my policy. This, despite no other claims ever on any of my policies. I'd tell 'em to go to hell but State Farm offers by far the best rates for auto and homeowner's in my area.
