I’m a VN veteran. Spent one year flying light observation helicopters low and slow over triple canopy in the central highlands. While I appreciate the thought, it’s always difficult for me to know how to respond since the sentiment does not seem to result in a lot of people putting pressure on the reps to fund the VA at the level veterans deserve. I was one of the lucky ones. Shot up a lot (air craft), but never shot down or wounded, nor suffering from some of the chemicals used in the AO. Unfortunately, I am friends of many in my old unit who are not as fortunate as I am. I have had to write letters confirming that I served in theatre with guys, and written letters asking for better and more timely care for veterans. I’ve had friend put on hold for quite literally a year or more just to get through the paper work. I am always amazed how much is said about how we love our veterans, and then have to witness how poorly some are treated.

If you really love and appreciate veterans call your reps in both houses frequently, and remind them why they’re there.

Not meant to be doubting anyone’s sincerity, just trying to point out how to put your appreciation into action.

Thank you. I am 100% P/T from AO… battled a long time to get it awarded… then couldn’t get a VA clinic appointment for almost 3 years after the 100% award… and when I made that public they denied they had refused me… till I played some audio clips of the conversations, when they shut up and I kept getting apology phone calls. Now, after the state passed a law that gives people in my status a very generous extra tax property exemption my county is trying to take it away. At a last communication, I indicated that we had reached a point where a lawyer would start interfacing with them… then th county lawyer kicked the decision up to the state… and I wait. I may not live long enough to make it worth the state but the exemption stays with my wife so I must resist.

Yes, we need the Government to do a better job of taking care of those “THEY” send into harms way, and when the Vets come home, don’t want to take care of them. But look at the retirement and medical packages the elected representatives get, they sure take care of themselves.

Agent Orange. I’ve lost one relative and in the process of losing another to the effects of Agent Orange exposure. Although I did serve in VN, I was lucky (I think) not to have been affected by it (yet).
