I was skeptical about 12fps on the R5, so I tested mine. The mechanical shutter tops out at 8fps at 1/500 with a single battery installed. Adding the grip with two batteries and it does in fact shoot 12fps mechanical. The electronic shoots exactly 20fps with or without the grip.
According to the R5 manual...
Mechanical shutter 12 fps (H+) is available under the following conditions:
- Room temperature 23C (73F)
- Battery LP-E6NH. Charge level at least 60% or
using BG-R10 with two LP-E6NH with charge level at least 60%
- Shutter speed 1/1000 or faster
- Wi Fi not connected
- Flicker reduction (Anti-Flicker) disabled
- Set to maximum aperture, when using RF lenses or select, compatible EF lenses adapted.
- Not possible when using WFT-R10 Wireless File Transmitter.
- May be slowed when shooting with Servo AF depending upon subject conditions or lens used.Besides single shot and self timer modes, there are three drive modes:
Icon L is low speed continuous
Icon H is high speed continous
Icon H+ is high speed plus continuous
When using mechanical or 1st curtain electronic shutter, in both H+ and H drive modes the icon itself indicates the camera's current status, as follows...
- When H+ icon is green, mechanical & 1st curtain elec shutter can do 12 fps.
- When H+ icon is white, mechanical & 1st curtain elec shutter can do 9.2 fps.
- When H+ icon is blinking white, mech & 1st curtain elec shutter can do 6.8 fps
- When H icon is green, mechanical shutter can do 6 fps
- When H icon is white, mechanical shutter can do 5.1 fps
- When H icon is blinking white, mech shutter can do 3.9 fps
- When H icon is green, electronic 1st curtain shutter can do 8 fps
- When H icon is white, electronic 1st curtain shutter can do 6 fps
- When H icon is blinking white, elec 1st curtain shutter can do 3.9 fps
- Set to L icon both mechanical & 1st curtain shutter can do 3 fps
- Set to electronic shutter 20 fps is possible in all three continuous drive modes with RF and select EF lenses.
