When I look in file, info data in adobe camera raw it indicates that my raw was taken with "pattern metering"
What is that. I do not remember putting that setting into my sony ar7 iv a. As far as I can remember I linked my metering to my focus. My focus was probably expanded flexible spot although it could have been zone or flexible spot. Thanks

Pattern Metering Mode I believe it's Sony name for Canon's Evaluative Metering Mode or Nikon's Matrix Metering Mode and I think it's selected by default. The other two modes are spot and center weighted.

Sony calls it Multi-Segment Metering. Not sure where the pattern metering came from.

You can consult your downloaded PDF copy of your Sony manual. Or, review the Camera Settings menu in your camera for the metering mode. There, you can confirm the current setting and / or adjust to some other metering option.

Sony defines "Multi-pattern metering" as: Measures light on each area after dividing the total area into multiple areas and determines the proper exposure of the entire screen. Other Sony options include Center and Spot.

As mentioned above, the Sony "Multi-pattern metering" option is similar to the other major brands that evaluate the entire image frame to determine the exposure.

In the Sony manual for the A7RII, page 118, they call it "Multi-pattern metering". They probably use the same name in all Sony digital camera menus and manuals.

Thanks
In setting up my camera I missed that setting. It must be hidden somewhere deeper in their famous menu than I had gone. Now to find it!!!!!

Of course it raises the question. If the metering and focus are linked, is the metering centered around the focus point no matter where the focus point is? I guess I have no choice but to wade through the complete camera guide

As you read, the important thing to keep in mind is that this mode looks at essentially the entire frame (I think the manual claims 95% of it) to determine exposure. It may give somewhat more weight to the central part of the frame.

Ok The camera itself calls the setting "multi" metering
The pdf guide lists the setting as multi metering and then in parenthesis calls it multi pattern metering

You used "weird metering", and Adobe reported that. Exact terminology not withstanding. Use normal metering and check for yourself what name Adobe chooses to indicate that.

Where do you see it? Lightroom? I shoot Nikon & if opened in NX Studio, (Nikon's software) I get Matrix, Fastone Imageviewer= Multi Segment & LR=Pattern for the metering mode. Use the software that came with your camera & you should see (I would think) exactly what you chose. Have fun, Tom
