Here is a quick way: with your object selected, type Cmd-J (Ctrl-J for PC) that puts your object on its own layer.
You now need to delete the underlying layer, so in the Layer palette, drag the Background layer to the trash.
Now save the extracted object as a PSD or TIFF. You CANNOT save it as a JPG or you will put a background layer in the image.

If I was you I would google some tutorials.
It's a complicated procedure for someone to walk you through it online.
.EDIT.
Doh!! Then Captain goes and makes me look silly by making it sound so simple.
Listen to him not me!

Thanks everyone. I guess I blew it. Lost my selection. It only took me 2 hours to select it. I will post it and see if I can get some help. Lighthouse, I have googled and googled , taking a Kelby Training course read and read. at my age it doesn't click as easy as it used to.

There's not enough money in the world to buy this sweetheart. Well! maybe there is:)
Hi Mel, is this what you're looking for? I was using CS4 so don't know how different PSE11 is.
When doing PP I always make a duplicate layer before I do anything else, then it's easy to go back and start again. So when you make your selection go to invert in the "Select" menu and press delete on keyboard, that will delete the background.
Hope that helps, probably not as I'm a rotten teacher! Keep practicing, you'll soon get the hang of it!
Photoshop is user friendly, yes but, at the same time not as easy for a beginner to master, as we make it sound like.
It takes patience and lots of practice. The advice you got is good nwo just go try it out many times. I think all you might need is on hands instruction a few times and you'll be opn your way.
What I did was join a photo /camera group in my area. Then I asked for help fo the more seasoned photographers. Some groups even give you lessons on "how to."
Do not give up. It might seem impossible now but as soon as you "get it" you'll be OK.

I suggest your topic heading should have been - "Help with smart brush tool in PSE 11."
Then, I would not have needlessly stopped by.
