Trying to have LR Classic copy to XMP as well as LR format upon import...does not work

I have used LR for over a decade, it's a nightmare when I work on my PC in the field and try to import that catalogue onto my desktop at home.

An associate suggested the following:

1. Set LR on my portable to automatically write to XMP when downloading...looked like a no brainer...Cat. settings>
Meta Data>Set to automatically write to XMP when downloading. Even though I set up to automatically write to XMP it never shows up! All suggestions greatly appreciated.

2. Once done, the designated Picture file on my portable when put on desktop will have all of the meta data with LR enhancements that I have made in the field.

3. Import into Desktop LR and I should be home free with all LR enhancements now on Desktop LR...sounds great but I cannot get step one to work.

How much data do you have in the LRCAT on the PC? If PC catalog only contained all the recent (new) work / images, you could copy both the image files and that LRCAT onto the home PC. Then, run an import from another catalog and point to that copied LRCAT. You'll need to also position the image files where they permanently belong on your home PC and update their positions in the home LR catalog.

Another option is to sort your laptop LRCAT and export the images that need to be transferred. Rather than the typical export of images, use the File / Export as Catalog. You'll need to Select-All the relevant images and then run the export catalog. The resulting new LRCAT would then be copied to where the home PC can use the LRCAT as an import source. Again, you'll need to position the image files where they belong in long-term storage, either move inside the home PC LR catalog. Or, move externally and update the LR catalog positions / folders afterward.

This lets you figure out the XMP issue separately. I don't have the same LR version, nor do I use XMPs. But, when I've looked into previous for existing images, the 'create' the XMP files process is pretty time-consuming as a background process as LR scans the LRCAT for existing images and proceeds to write LRCAT data to these new external files. Possibly, the process just hasn't completed? Who knows. But, again, you can solve that issue separately from moving your images into your main LRCAT.

Another option is the export the images from the travel catalog as DNGs. Then, copy the DNGs and the original images to your home PC. If you just import the DNGs, that will give you the images and the edits. You can import both, and just stack the DNG over the images inside your home PC.

The images and XMPs are the easiest process with less work after importing into your target home PC. But, above are three other / valid ways to transfer the data until the XMP issue is resolved.

I said I don't use XMPs and have only tested in the past. What I tested since writing earlier was to export a select group of 2016 images from the LRCAT on my own laptop. Once that export LRCAT was created, I opened that catalog which caused LR to restart to make a new LRCAT active. When LR came back, I update my catalog settings to write XMPs. This small 'export catalog' contained only 36 images.

In the folder structure created by the Catalog Export, a folder was created that mimicked the original folder of the image files. The XMP files were created there in about a minute clock-time. You might try this process to give you a folder / folders of copies of your original images and the XMPs you're looking for. Still doesn't answer the 'why' question of the main laptop catalog, but gives you a fourth option, and a desired solution, to get just the images and XMPs transferred to your home / main LR catalog.

Have you tried Export as Catalog which will create a catalog plus (optionally) a copy of the original files to whatever transfer media you choose.

Then after you physically move to the existing target catalog then do Import as Catalog and Shazam there it is.

I have used thumb drives to get a little catalog to workshops and Dropbox to get a small number of photos across country to my daughters iMac for a family project.

It is easy but does present you options so it helps to pay attention and I would always double click to open the transfer catalog at before it leaves and after it arrives just to be sure you didn’t screw it up. Works just fine between Windows and Apple.

No need to figure out .XMP files. And I have only tried current versions at both ends.
