So here I am in Cambodia with a less than three day old camera and I can’t get a good overall setting for shots. Recommendations? I just graduated from a20 year old 5300…

I assume you can get Youtube at your hotel. First place I would go to.

Why aren't you using the same "good overall settings" as you used with your previous camera.

Aperture, shutter speed and ISO purpose remain the same and focus modes can surely be easily mirrored.

If you want a good overall setting for shots you should be using a cell phone camera or a point and shoot. If you are using a D850 the aperture, shutter speed and ISO will differ significantly depending on your subject and whether or not its moving, the available lighting, and most importantly the lens you have mounted. What shooting mode were you using on your older camera? What lens do you have mounted n the D850?

Are you looking for replacements for the "Scene" settings that your D5300 offered? The D850 does not offer those. It does offer a number of "Picture Control" options through the menu.

Tell us more about what you are wanting to do, and we can try set you on the right track.

Call Nikon at 1-800-645-6687.
Or, do a two button reset on your camera.

F8 - 1/800 - Auto ISO

Shoot NEF & JPG

---

Turn off all the fancy settings. If need be you can use your NEF files and reproduce the settings in a computer.

Post/attach a photo & check the store original box. If your talking blurry or soft photos, you might need to increase your shutter speed with the increase in megapixels. Also decent lenses are needed with that many mp. Have you tried the P Mode? Fully automatic & see what your cameras brain decides to give you a starting point.

Have you checked your exposure control dial to make sure it is set either to zero or at least to where you want it? I made that mistake once. Made a big difference.

Did you get full frames lens? My understanding is DX lens are the best for FF and even then you need to use Crop mode if I have read correctly

Why would you suggest this when we don't even know the problem the OP is experiencing?

You might consider setting the camera on autofocus singe, matrix metering, Mode P and ISO at 64 and auto ISO on. The ISO stuff can be found under the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU 2nd page 'ISO sensitivity settings'. These setting should allow you to just frame your subject and shoot letting the camera do most of the exposure work. If you want more control you can of course select a different mode (S, A or M). Enjoy your trip!!
