Last week the volume control buttons on my old Samsung S10e started to get intermittent. Thinking that maybe the protective case it was in was causing the issue, I pried the protective case off. Surprise! I had a bit more of a problem than the volume controls. Despite working just fine, the battery was in the process of failing and had inflated to the point where it lifted the back of the case off, and my protective case was the only thing holding it together. Same failure mechanism as our camera batteries, so be careful.

Yes, that does tend to happen when the battery swells. It's like when water freezes. There's no stopping it.
I've often wondered if using certain types (materials) of cases affects the battery cooling. The new S23 series of phones have larger cooling spaces. (Forgot the technical name) to help with cooling.

I've seen recommendations for removing the case when charging, although I never do that.
