My first swim meet!!!

Hi HOG friends. Please critique these for me. This was first time swim shoot. Beautiful Aquatic Center (We tax payers paid out the nose for this but Nice). Big place, both ends 2-3 stories high. All glass. Lighting was different because of that and I assume the water just killed it, made lighting very difficult. I asked about lighting and the man told was setup format cameras. Holy crap, Thought that sucks. Any way this was probably my toughest shoot ever. The glare off the water made it hard to shoot. Thanks for your time. BE SAFE!!

Tom

Diving can be really tough to shoot. You did a great job. Compared to most aquatic centers the light looks pretty good with the large glass windows. I’ve been in many requiring up to 20000 ISO.

Oh yeah, I've found diving very difficult as well for the same reason(s) as you encountered. Good job freezing the action. Perhaps trying to reduce the highlight post processing? In LRC adjust lighting as much as possible for the background and then create a mask concentrating on the subject and brighten it. Just a thought.

Were you able to get down on the deck to get some of the swimming events such as breast stroke, butterfly and relays? I like trying to capture the divers mid air or just as their finger tips touch the water. Get a beverage of choice and watch some of the YouTube videos out there for ideas.

Yea I was right by the pool, no problem. The swimming part of the meets is tough for me. Trying to get in position to get a face shot is hard. Thanks BE SAFE!!

Tom,

I haven't personally shot diving/swimming/water-polo type sports yet but, man the back lighting in these pictures is an enormous obstacle to overcome. Maybe like Rick C said, take those pictures of the dive before entering the water or some tuck position. I didn't look at all your focal lengths but you did use 85mm for 2 photos, do you think 70-200mm would be good or even a 300mm or 400mm just to separate the diver from the background?

Rick

Tom:
These look pretty good to me. I also have not shot any swimming or diving. You captured the backlit situation nicely. I was told to open up a stop to compensate for the back lit. I like them.
I also am wondering why you couldn't get to the floor and shoot the swimming part. If there was a swimming part or was it just diving.
